Tipsy Imperial Concubine

Hi all, now everyone is thinking of this years rose orders. In one of my increasingly rare spare moments I was inspired by the beauty of Tipsy Imperial Concubine, and figured I'd better pull my finger out and figure out how to upload...I've posted a piccie on the Gallery. I accidentally bought two last season and am glad I did. Very nice indeed.

Oh! I love this rose so much! I did't know one could get it in Oz! Racing over to Gallery now to sigh over your pic, Snodge. MUST get this one. My 2005 list is now a total wreck-o-rama.

I'm obviously too giddy to find the pic. You'd think I was looking for a lost child in a department store. What did you call your shot?

You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. Any user can access the Advanced Search, but Premium Membership permits you to specify multiple traits and types, where basic membership only provides Advanced Search using one criteria. Kim

I'm in the Phoenix area, so hot and very dry and have 2 Tipsy Imperial Concubines. I don't spray and grow organically. I've had one plant for about a year and it's great, no disease at all (we don't have much here) and the blooms are to die for. Huge and beautiful, wonderful fragrance. The other plant is less than one year and currently has a huge bloom on it. So far it seems to blooms singly, like a hybrid tea. The blooms to me are quite exotic, different from any other rose I've grown. She is definately one of the roses I am particulary fond of. Probably they take a pretty dry climate, from what I've read.

I have Tipsy for three years now. It is a smalll bush and not a vigorous one. But I have her in full sun and maybe that is the reason for lack of flowers. Next to her I have Mademoiselle Franziska Kruger, which has very good rebloom (but no smell). In the first summer I waited and waited for Tipsy to bloom, and then it rained and the blooms didnt open. Last year she was doing nothing again and I started thinking of removing her. But then there was long and warm autumn and the miracle happened. She started to bloom, big blooms with great fragrance. I cannot wait this year.

Betty, I have several roses that ball. One, Auguste Renoir, seems to have botrytis...looks brown on the outside of the buds, fails to open, and the buds are completely ruined. My Clotilde Soupert usually balls for the first spring flush. I cut off all the balled blooms. Then when it warms up she's fantastic. I haven't had a problem on Tipsy yet but have had on Eden. Those roses with lots of petals do it. Well, MichaelG did some experiments with spraying calcium for botrytis, so I tried his formula this spring. I bought some calcium nitrate, mixed 2 t. I think it was with a gallon of water, strained it and then sprayed the buds of most of my many-petalled ones. THis year for the first time Auguste Renoir is not balling, Clotilde is even opening and Eden is starting to open. I never saw what looked like botrytis on Clotilde but anyway, the calcium spray seems to be helping. Maybe it would help your Tipsy. I didn't know roses would ball due to heat. Is it hot already where you are? I thought roses with lots of petals dislike cool humid conditions. Linda

Glad to hear from you again. Missed your sensible comments for a few weeks. TIC is gorgeous - I saw it at a rose garden last week but will also try and find your gallery.

Snodge! Had given you up for dead-to-the-world-due-to-house-building. How is the building going? Is your garden surviving the workmen? Welcome back.

House building still in planning phase, but SOOOOO many fundamental decisions beyond the size shape of the house - and that's challenging enough. Work keeping me very busy too, and to cap it off I'm doing a tertiary course for work as well, Just one subject, which fortunately work has got UNSW to run the classes during working hours close by the office. I pop in to the forum for a very brief lurk occassionally..but you know me once I start writing, so hard to stop.....:o)

Garden has been getting a bit more neglected than usual lately, though now the weather has cooled a bit, I'm trying to put in the time to dead head and throw a *little* water around on a hose day once in a while. Lovely flush of roses just now, and hence the piccies of TIC.

I'm a bit worried about the garden actually with the house and all, with the new Basix requirements they include your garden in the calculation, with a big push for drought tolerant stuff specially natives...I think roses are remarkably drought tolerant, but somehow I doubt the department of planning agrees.....anyhow, we have such a large garden that will count against us as well....at least the other half of the yard is natives...

Oh, I should probably say, the lengthy planning period is a relief gardenwise. It's looking like the house will interfere with my favourite rose bed afterall (we were hoping to avoid it)- mostly teas, and my wonderful mislabel, not to mention daylilies, irises and such....so I'm pleased I should have the cooler months while plans go through council and my other half settles into a new job, to shift precious stuff out of the way.
