This is a deep crimson cosmos that popped up in my garden. Not a particularly good photo but you get the idea.
It has to be, at least, 2m tall and almost the size of my wrist (which is average for a female) at the base.
I keep expecting to see someone climbing down it!!

I've been ws for 7+ years and generally start my perennial seeds anytime after winter solstice though mostly in late January/February. Annuals get sown in late March/early April. Most everything sprouts by midMay. I probably should have covered the jugs during some of those daily rains. With the changing weather patterns I will consider it a lesson learned and hope that we don't have another such spring for many years. Some of the jugs were "second chance" jugs, seeds that didn't sprout last year and given a second sowing to see if they might another time. Perhaps those seeds would not have sprouted this year anyway. A few of the old reliables sprouted, alcea, aquilegia, dianthus, papaver, penstemon, platycodyn. Annuals: antirrhinum, cleome, gomphrena, mirabalis, nasturtium, nicotiana, portulaca, salvia, and zinnia.

Hi Amy, My area is actually in the front left corner of my lot looking out my front door. My back yard is full blazing sun and I have yet to plant the back fence. I'm trying to talk my husband into getting rid of his horse shoe pits,it's the only thing between me and a full sun garden back there! Have a great Day Lisa This is a pic of my town owned land garden. I live on a street alone and they let me make it pretty! Of course, I mean to the right! My husband builds me that little holding area at the end of the street for me to hold plants that are waiting to be potted,planted or given away. This area is on the back left fence in mostly full sun, 90% of the plants were winter sown!!!!! This is my biggest garden, right front side looking out my front door. I would say that at least half of the plants were winter sown! I need a wide angle camera, I can't get a pic of the whole gardes! This is standing in the middle of the biggest section of the garden. Don't be afrai to wonter sow those seeds!!!!

I sow seeds in the winter all the way through spring. The only seeds that you have to watch are those that need a cold period to germinate. Marigolds, cosmos, and zinnias are tender and you'll want to wait until closer to your last frost date to sow. I'm in NE Ohio and my last frost date is May 15th. I plan to start mine in mid-April. I have wintersown zinnia before and as soon as the temps drop their leaves burn and they shrivel up and croak. Lol* So that's why it's good to wait! Larkspur I believe is one that needs cold, I started mine a few weeks ago. You could always try them though. Monarda I have sown all throughout spring with success. :)

it gets direct sun all day. There is nothing near it and that tree behind it is not between it and the sun... have no idea why it's grown so big. Thought I might try to get some of its seeds and try them elsewhere and just see what happens. I love the colour anyway so even if they don't grow that big, it won't matter.
I've had a couple of white that have grown tall as well but not that big.

Gees, I thought mine were big but that dwarfs them. Only problem with them is they just keep on self seeding and come up willy-nilly everywhere! But they do look nice in flower though.

I don't mind the self-seeding as long as it's the colour I want. I remember one year I'd put in the yellow one. That was when I realized that I don't particularly like yellow flowers. Honestly it took me several seasons before I got rid of them all.
But why this one has grown like this I have no idea. It will be interesting to see if any of its children do the same...just think...they say that, these days, children are growing taller than their parents...think of what I'll have next season!!! lololol

My cosmos are about 15' now and taken over a large section of my garden. I want to use them next year as a fence because mine blew down in a storm

They don't have a real strong stem, so they're not so good exposed to strong winds.
