silicon, the element

Has anyone fed their plants silicon? I seem to remember the research institutions promoting it to the cane farmers up here in the last 10 years. I'm trying to be lateral about this whitefly infestation I'm blessed with and figured that am unlikely to do any harm by applying a foliar version at least several times to the affected species, and whatever else takes my fancy.

This preparation's analysis is silica min 28% w/v, potassium min 25% w/v. The K can only be helpful too. Even if it doesn't help against whitefly, it might toughen plants for drought.
