Question about Beehive ginger

I have a garden that receives almost full sun. It currently has a Costas barbatus and a hedychium coccineum that are growing extremely well. The soil is a sandy loam and has a thick layer of mulch. Soon it will receive some shade from a bleeding heart tree.

Would this garden be suitable for a beehive ginger?

Yes, plenty of sun for good flowering and rich moist soil, can be grown from stem cuttings either in water or in consistently moist soil.

Beehive gingers cannot be struck from stem cuttings, many Costus certainly can but not Zingiber spectabile. I also find that the foliage burns a fair bit in very strong sunlight but yes strong dappled light is needed for best flowering although I have some that are now in deep shade that still flower reasonably well.

Besides fragrance, relative disease resistance and being medium height what else do you require from the rose you are looking for? Do you want a florist rose? I haven't heard of anyone having the HT (florist) Bolero here. I try to understand why you would insist on the florist rose Bolero. The floribunda Bolero is quite disease resistant and very fragrant. Mine is own root from Northland Rosarium, so I am not sure if the final size is 3' tall or can get a bit taller but it must be available grafted that grows faster. Jardins de Bagatelle is about 4' tall. Ginger hill will definitely be taller here in zone 8 (if I can give that poor plant a decent spot) and wider, too but far from being as fragrant as Bolero or Jardins de B are. Apropos, another very fragrant white blend is Helena Renaissance, although I do not find it disease resistant; besides HR hardly stops at 5'-6' in height. Karen Blacken would meet the size and fragrance requirements, not too bad as blackspot goes either but it is pure white not a blend. Isn't it strange that we cannot come up with a lot of choices in this white blend category? Meanwhile I remember that in the past when forumers were looking for pure whites most of the whites recommended turned out to be Ânot pure whitesÂ but blends. I wish I could recall that list now. I wonder if Full Sail is a blend or not Â that one I am not familiar with.

I have seen these 'tubers" on this plant and a few others. I leave them on the plants when I transplant. The plant seemed to slow down growth when they are removed. Nothing grew for us from them when they were removed and planted, but I read somewhere that they will make new plants. -Gwenn

H Dr. Moy is an excellent choice. I am really pleased with H. Luna Moth. It is vigorous and compact, to about 4 feet tall in a pot. The leaves are broad and a nice dark green color. I just noticed today that the ends of the stalks are swelling on my plant. The white flowers look like H. coronarium, a bit larger and blooming several at a time per stalk through November if I cover it when frost threatens. The scent is super spicy-sweet, especially at night. Very easy to grow and bloom, likes lots of water, a good feed once a week at half strength, and fish emulsion for a treat. Can be stored dormant like cannas, etc. Luna Moth is the most dependable, robust and beautiful Hedychium I have grown.

Dear Coral_coast,
Interested to read your return on Beehive ginger, I have managed to strike the ginger in water when using the foliage and stems along with the flower in vase arrangements, I dind,t plant out the cuttings but there was definately root growth and a small shoot. Hi everyone! I have about 5 boxes of zingibers that are shooting now. We sell heaps and it's easier to get them in 6in. pots this way.they strike better in either the spring or autumn and in high humidity. Some like pachy. are harder but most aren't too bad.we discovered this because we had babies popping up in heavily mulched areas of the garden. We find that beehives will grow well in the full sun if you can keep the water up. however, the foliage always looks better in a bit of shade. Don't be afraid to cut back abit of foliage that maybe in front of the flower display. It's hard to find a hardier tropical. Also there are earlier and later flowering beehives. So if you use a few different types you can have beehive flowers for most of the year. Ann

Hi all, I too have struck Z. Spectabile stem cuttings in both water and in heaped cuttings in the bottom of my shade house. Good luck you will be pleased with this ginger.
