In praise of Scentimental

Henceforth to be called...Queen of the spriped roses.

I no longer pine for Variegata de Bologna.. (had it, one of the few who died in the drought)

By golly this rose is something special for those who like striped roses.

Covered in bloom, everyone different, an absolute show stopper.

Odd name for a rose with little perfume, but gee, what a performer.

Hi Fran,
Yeah it is on my 'most wanted' list after seeing and smelling it at a nursery.
Maybe yours is too young to have developed the perfume yet?
Wait for it.:)

I'm enjoying this thread. Kathy, I also will "overlook a good deal of misbehavior" (love that turn of phrase!) if I love a rose. Mike, that is a guideline I use to urge me to the shovel, too, the knowledge that if I did really regret removing a rose, I could most likely get it again. (But it makes truly rare roses, say only those available intermittently from one nursery, even tougher to get rid of...) julysun, I love all those fragrant roses too. If you don't already have Jude the Obscure and Frederic Mistral, you might want to take a look/sniff-they both have pretty good disease resistance (here, anyway.) generator, if you hang around here a lot, we'll help you fill up all your space ;-) lucretia, yes, go girl, pull them out and order some others! Pink Gruss has been very impressive here, no disease in tons of shade, no thorns, nice (soft) fragrance, too. I'm landscaping the front with 4 more this spring. (I guess that is the highest praise, since, as we know, I have no space.) Dawn

I'm loving this thread! There are some really gorgeous Carruth roses out there. I was very happy with Cinco de Mayo and Marilyn Monroe and Twilight Zone and Hot Cocoa this past season. For next year I'm adding Diamond Eyes, About Face, and hopefully Stainless Steel. Julia Child was my 'gateway' rose - I'll always love her. Diane, I can never get enough photos of the front of your house! White Licorice is very pretty too. It goes beautifully with JC!

When Roses Begin to Age

Also, you might consider Chamblee's Roses. They are shipped in gallon pots and are more mature than roses of many own-root vendors. Chamblee's selection is not as extensive as some, but they do have nice roses. Another vendor with larger own-root plants is High Country Roses, though their selection is aimed at colder climates. Still, you might find some you like there; I have. Amity Heritage Roses used to sell the largest own-root bands around, just gorgeous plants, but I don't think they are currently active. It didn't look like it to me when I last visited their website. Probably there are others, but I'm only mentioning ones I have purchased from myself. My personal favorite vendor is Vintage, and I buy the majority of my roses there, but you do have to mature them in a gallon pot yourself. Rosefolly

bump this thread up. I'm looking for info. on Brocelliande as to the scent, and how long it will survive zone 5 winter as own-root. Thank you. Neil Diamond is VERY WIMPY as own-root in zone 5, gave a few blooms per tiny bush, then died after a few zone 5 winters. In contrast, my neighbor had a very vigorous Rock & roll (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) that gave prettier blooms plus nicer scent than Neil Diamond. How's Rock & roll vigor as own-root? Thank you. Rock & Roll scent is way better than Neil Diamond (fleeting scent that's gone fast in vase) & very tiny as own-root, see below in my zone 5 garden:

I DO have it. It's right outside the window, planted next to Orthello and they look great together.
It's just had another dead head and has plenty of blooms.
It's a super rose that's now aobut four years old.. but my nose cannot find a perfume unless I stick it in the flower...ah well - can't have everything... :)

Smarter minds then mine will no doubt tell you, but I'd have said floribunda - because of it's flowering habit!
The blooms are very good size, and no two are the same!
