I would ask some questions before getting to far along I see this post started back a bit but... is this a open area or is it shaded by the house, tree, etc? Corn is wild pollinated so it would be better (critical mass) to have a larger area with several rows or be less organized and do a honey comb pattern and as the corn gets say 3 1/2 feet high plant acorn squash or vine beans with them as the corn is harvested you get the beans climbing the corn for support. That is alot of summer squash for two unless thats zuchinni and summer(yellow) squash. Placement of plants is tricky cause you want to rotate placement next year and you don't want to shade short plants with tall plants. Raised beds you dont have to leave walk room but you will in a traditional garden that said if your renting you wouldn't want the expense of putting in raised beds... we have 400 sq feet of raised beds which provides for two with some for storage. I am planning on increasing that size next year as my kids get older and eat more. I would venture that this would equal about 600 sq feet if you had to leave walk ways. I do use poles for beans and trellis for cucumbers, peas, watermelon, and pumpkin. I would also add watch what you can double crop potatoes and peas will be done in time for you to put in pumpkin and late beans this will cut down on space you need. Carrots planted next to tomatoes can also be pulled for young tender carrots before the tomatoes tower over them might also want to look at planting borage and marigolds they help with pests and encourage pollinators to visit. One last bit of advice no matter how many years you do this you will always be new to it set aside a small area to try something new every year purple carrots, artichoke, peanuts, white pumpkin, asian greens, or funky color beans you will learn maybe find a new favorite vegi but more than likly you will just visit the garden more often and take better care of everything. Haley: I'm in year 2 of a similar gardening project and the most important thing I've learned is: Do the Bones First. ie., if you want to put in a path, do that year 1. If you want to replace the fence (something white with some curve would stand out against the angles of the house and be in period) do it year 1. In a sense you're lucky that the sprinkler system will easily cover your yard without having to plan any planting beds, first. Do that year 1. Also year 1, start a nursery bed. Rather than buying 16" shrubs and paying through the ear, get smaller specimans of shrubs and perennials and grow them on this year with the plan to place them Year 2 or 3. This will save you a LOT of digging and moving. You are in the fortuate position to be able to use almost any palette, but I'd stay away from multicolor given the proximity of the house to the corner. "Too much" color variety will look confusing because the eye won't be able to see any one thing. Pick a base color and accent from there. A neat trick is to use complimentary plant forms on adjacent walls to give it continuity, but use different colors of the same plant. The eye won't split it because of the form, but you'll get some "base" variety in coloration. When I saw the South side of the house my thought immediately went to a good, hardy climbing rose. At our house climbing roses are considered "Bones" and therefore can be planted Year 1. :-) Good luck and keep us updated! Martie

That sounds great. I leave in SE Tennessee outside of Chattanooga and nearer to GA actually. Right now I have 4 different mints I could share: spearmint, peppermint, mint julep, and lemon mint, cutting of English Ivy, Yellow Iris, Genovese Basil, Thai Basil, Cherry Tomatoes, Roma Tomatoes, VictoriaBlue Salvia, Veronica Blue Speedwell, lanceleaf Coreopsis, etc. What do you have to trade? This could be fun! Of course your daughter-in-law is more than welcome to come as well. Tomorrow ai have an iron infusion that will take at least 2 hours plus travel time. Maybe next week? I'm assuming you are in the U.K. Michelle. 1. Is a hazel. Probably a self sown one from a passing bird or squirrel. It has a couple of nuts visible on it. 2. Is Lavender and Welsh Poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) It is not a Ranunculus 3. Cordyline 4. A miserable Rosemary. 5. Mint perhaps Apple Mint 6. Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' 7. Phlox 8. Philadelphus aka Mock Orange 9. Aubretia which needs clipping over. It is not a Sedum. It has a tiny seedling Papaver somniferum growing in it. 10. Choysia ternata 'Sundance'
