thought I would share a couple of photos of my gomphrena flowers. we were having an unusually mild summer so I thought Id plant them out in right in the middle of summer, of course as soon as I planted them the weather got hot but they have coped really well with it. I'll definitely be growing these again

Hi TG...Love your pics both look great and are nice colours.
I have never grown them what are they like waterwise ???
I peeked at them all hope you dont mind they are all so pretty.

thanks MM, and no I dont mind! Im just a bit embarrassed by my meagre photo collection and the garden is still quite young and still very bitsy.

waterwise the gomphrena have been very good and they look a lot more delicate than they really are. I have very sandy soil that dries out quickly and I just go around with a bucket maybe twice a week and empty it on the 5 of them. theyve wilted a bit on really hot days, but with a bit of water they perk up again without any problems, and they are in a spot that gets full sun all day long aswell. I think they would have done even better if I planted them much earlier too because they didnt get a chance to get settled in before they had to deal with the hot weather.

Im really hoping theyll set some seed so I can save some, and if I get any seeds youre welcome to have some if you like. I grew these ones from a seed packet I bought and they werent any trouble to grow.

It's possible you are watering it too much and that it may not be getting enough sun, though it almost looks like the tips froze. Did the nighttime temperatures drop? Gomphrena are really drought tolerant, they enjoy the heat and like to dry out between watering. I would try watering less and ensuring it gets plenty of sun & warmth. Hope this helps. What I often do, Josh, is the lazy way........buy one plant and let it run to seed. Grub about underneath the plant to look for tiny seedlings. Dig up and either keep in a pot or transplant to where you want it. I don't know how to do links but The Seed Site has a massive amount of info about sowing seeds....and most helpfully, a great number of images of the tiny seedlings. You should be aware, Josh, that, judging by your rose mania (addiction), you will be helpless against the grip of seed sowing. In a very short time, you will be drooling over seed packets and all your pockets will have permanent stashes of seed. The fridge will be full while every flat surface, indoors or outside, will have pots or seed-trays taking every inch of space. You will love it!

Jennifer, since we don't know anything about your techniques, all I can do is suggest the best practices for this plant.....factors that I personally am careful about. Your planting mix must be very coarse textured so that it drains rapidly. After germination, the seedlings should only be watered when the medium becomes a little dry....it should never be kept consistently moist. I germinate all of my different kinds of seeds in seed flats, then transplant them when tiny into their individual cell packs with my favorite 'fast' potting mix. Gomphrena will get watered less frequently than most other varieties. My growing chamber is kept on the cool side once the germination process is over; a couple of small fans keep the air circulating. These plants are practically xeric in my experience. That's how I treat them for their entire time with me.

I have always called them Batchelor's Buttons, now I know their proper name.

I like the dark ones the best,
The Scilla Peruviana is a lovely colour.

I have the dwarf purple ones, and they really are tough! I think they'd keep on performing even if I NEVER watered them.

If anyone would like some seeds let me know.

TG, once the flowerheads have turned a straw colour, you'll find that each of the little 'petals' has a seed at the end.
