Beehive Ginger Flowers

Beehive Gingers, I love Gingers they have such a varied,interesting and unusual flowers.

We've had some wild weather the past few days, infortunately not enough rain in the places that needed it most, but at least a little relief. These photos were taken at Alexander Headland, Sunshine Coast.

The spume whipped up by the heavy seas almost looks like milk. :-)

Great pictures of the Ginger flowers. Other pictures very interesting too. You've got a good camera with great resolution.

Yes it does appear to be Dichorisandra thyrsiflora. Not a true ginger, you probably know that. Makes quite a good cut-flower too with the bonus that the stems usually root in water and give you the potential of more plants.

I have the same problem and I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to get the butterfly ginger to bloom. Mine are in the ground, get lots of water (gray water) and seem to be triving. They get some dappled morning and noon sun through the trees( but are basically in shade), and a straight shot of afternoon sun for 2-3 hours. The plants/stalks/leaves are about 3 feet high. Last year they didn't bloom, last winter they were hit by some cold weather and died back but are looking healthy this year. But as of today no sign of blooms. Would a flowering and blooming fertilizer help?

Some gingers go dormant, some only slow down. If you've had it over 10 years you should have an idea of its growth habits. Has it been repotted in that time? The roots may have grown into the drain holes and blocked them up causing the soil to stay too wet. They do also like a lot of feeding.

The gingers are unusual looking aren't they. Never quite look real.

Glad I don't live on the coast in that sort of weather. At least it wasn't as bad as the Gold Coast. Someone looks like they are having fun in the foam.

Yes we certainly had wild and windy weather the past few days.
Magnificent shots Barbara and it does look like milk .
Frankly I think they are Stupid to go our there when its like that.
Nothing between the eyes... ......Love those Gingers Pics.

Yes Allan I am lucky enough to have a pretty good camera, I am rather fond of my cameras. LOL rarely leave home without them.

MM & GH, it was a shame we didnt get a litle more rain, but I suppose we should be happy with what we did get.
I agree re the idiots going into the water, all tehy did was endanger the lives of the lifesavers.
