Comments (6)I keep several musa outside, protected by small styrofoam boxes and one flourescent light bulb in each box, after chopping the leaves and stem off down to about three feet high. I have never tried the ensete outside. I have usually potted them in 15 gallon pots, cut them off to three feet high, and stuck them in a cool, unheated, unlit room in the basement. They stay dormant until you bring them into a heated room with some light. I have also kept them in the basement in a heated room with very little light after chopping them down to three feet, and they grow right back in no time at all. One I kept upstairs in the light continued to grow all winter, but it was hard to keep the spider mites under control. The ones in the basement never did have a problem with spider mites. However, the one I kept upstairs and did not chop off is outside for the summer and is the tallest of the group (about 10 feet tall right now)....See MoreEnsete Ventricosum doesn't grow after winter
Comments (0)Hi There I wonder if you could help me. I had stuffed the banana plant with straw over the winter when the heavy frosts started. Some of the leaves had received some frost damage, but the plant was definetely ok. In early April I had removed the straw and cut off the black (frost damaged) leaves. Later then I replanted it in the pot with fresh compost and osmocote to get it going again (it had worked well in the previous years). Impatient as I am, with no growth appearing, two weeks ago I cut it down further to get rid of all old brownish bits on the stump (see picture). I am regretting it now as it exposed the inside of the leaves and seems to have triggered rotting from the top. There is no growth and we are near the end of May. How can I prevent it from further rotting? Replanting? Drying the plant? Keep it away from the rain? Mank Thanks regards Alex...See MoreOrnamental Red Banana (Abyssinian banana, Ensete ventricosum)
Comments (22)I got a Red E Ventricosum banana late this spring. It did well in a pot getting quite large. About July I put it in the ground and did okay for awhile then started growing backwards (declining).. its pretty small right now..it really does dislike the hotter night temps as Eric (a previous poster) mentioned. I have grown both the green and red ones from seed in pots in S. Louisiana and they did quite well. They can get huge when they are happy. I'm going to put mine back in a pot again and see if it improves now that the nights are cooling off and it seems to be perking up a little. I think it takes the humidity better in a pot, based on my experiences. I also think they appreciate a little shade in the hottest part of the day here. I also grew these in AZ with basically no humidity and way above 100F temps during the summer they definitely hated that but survived with some shade and a misting system I had set up for my tropicals. My two Zebrina bananas are doing quite well, currently, in the ground and are beautiful. I've killed (or the winter, I should say, killed) 2 Siam Ruby bananas here but that was before I had my greenhouse techniques refined lol. ~Sjn...See More- 20 years ago
