Rain Forest

We live on acreage, which we run under the ÂLand for WildlifeÂ scheme. Our site is fairly hilly and is mainly forested with eucalypts but we do have some large areas that were old pasture and there are some large gaps in the area that has the eucalypts. It is our intention to introduce rain forest species appropriate to the region. Have any GW members succeeded in developing areas of rain forest on their land and are there any words of advice that they could pass on. We wish to increase the range of flora and fauna as well as making it more interesting for us to enjoy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been developing rainforest on my property in the GC hinterland for the last 15 years and it is coming along nicely. I now have about 1/2 acre of established r/f and 1 acre of "getting there" forest. You are more than welcome to have a look if you're down this way - just let me know by ringing me on 0409 556 924 or 3221 6666 during business hours. I think it would be easier to discuss actually on site.

Jan, I have recently bought two acres in Tallebudgera Valley (Gold Coast) which is a subdivided cattle property. I too am wanting to develop this into an interesting rainforest area and can't wait to start. I saw your topic question and had a look as I am trying to get information and tips for rainforest plants. I was curious what the "Land for Wildlife" scheme was that you mentioned? Sorry to respond to your question with another question!

lisa0527, I have read through the forum issues and I am not quite scared off from the quartzite quite yet. I am curious if anyone knows how people are able to get their samples to take home and abuse, I mean test to ensure the quartzite is really quartzite and not something in between, or not quite quartzite... pretty sure the yard isn't going to knock a piece off, and it doesn't seem like something they normally carry that they'd have laying around. Feel free to enlighten me, anyone. Majra, maybe you can learn from my glory, or my mistakes! ;) Beekeeperswife, I think I'm with you. The more full kitchens I see with rfg only, the more aggressive it looks to me. I think it's best used as an accent and I sadly do not have an island... it's a stone to fall in love with, but perhaps maybe not to marry? I was reading another post a few nights back about lamenting the loss of color... and while I do like the idea of committing to color and not being all neutrals, I'm not feeling like committing to that much rfg all over my kitchen. lolab, as to the unintentional miss, I am very worried about that. I think I will go back to the yard and take some pics, including more detailed pics of the quartzite so that I can better consider that stone, and the grey/champagne. Truthfully if I can rule it out my husband would be so much happier at a lower $/sqft. On something else. Which would be back to square one. Ugh. Truly appreciate all the input! This forum is a wonderful resource.

We have our RFG now for a month. It's smooth and shiny, but there are duller lines along some of the veins. No stains, scratches etc. Would you stand on any counter? I'm not going to stand on this one for sure. And I don't think I would stand on granite either. RFG is so gorgeous. We keep looking at it and finding new colors and veins. Today my sister found a tiger next to a stream. I have one spot that is a tornado. There are lots of tree tops and just odd color spots. As you saw in the photos, my kitchen is very plain. Slab doors and drawers, wood floor etc. I think RFG would clash with a fussy kitchen. Regarding price, we paid about $4000 for 62 sf, including fabrication and installation. We didn't pay extra for a fancy edge. Saturday is backsplash day. The tile is 3x6 glass subway in a very light green. I'll post photos when it's done. I hope you will keep RFG as a possibility. We are so happy with it and everyone who sees the kitchen is blown away.

Jim, this is my Ivory Coast. The closest is Sagae which is said to be bigger, but this is the second year for this and not far behind my Sagae in size and really pops. I have 3 Liberty and in my opinion they rank from bottom to top Liberty, Sagae, Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast in a little more than 1/2 day sun which helps the wide margins IMHO. It's a keeper. - Jon

Hi Brett,
The 'Land for Wildlife' scheme is a state (I think inter-state) run programme. The government through the Australian Natural Heritage Trust supports it. To get involved with it you would need to contact the 'Biodiversity Partnerships OfficerÂ at your Shire Council. They will come out and survey your site and then assist you with a plan to maximise the benefit of your site for the local flora and fauna. There is an enormous support system behind the scheme - propagation facilities, expert advice, newsletters and trips out gathering propagation material with the B. P. Officer etc. I think itÂs a great way forward if you are a landowner. It is small but significant counter-balance to the 'rape and pillageÂ of the country that is carried out by development and land clearance for agriculture (sorry - this isn't really the forum for political statements but it's difficult when you are watching all this destruction going on around you all the time).
