Tropical style garden in a courtyard

I'm wanting to create a tropical style garden in a L-shaped, western facing, Adelaide courtyard. The focal point is an entertainment area outside the back door. We are putting in a 4 metre wide (2.5metre high) flyover patio roof that will end at the beginning of the 1.6 metre wide garden bed. This garden bed is about 6 metres long. Our fence behind this is 1.8 metres high. I would like to have mixed 'tropical' style plants including ferns in this area however in summer it would get overhead sun (40C heat) that could sizzle the plants. Is there anything (ie small trees) that I could plant here that would look vaguely tropical that could provide a canopy for the under-story plants? I've thought of palms but once they get tall they don't provide much shade. I don't want more frangipani trees as we have them along our northern fence-line. There's not a lot of room (1.6 metre width) to work with.

Any help would be appreciated!
