Anyone interested in heliconias and other tropicals?

Paid another visit to Horganics in Chandler, Brisbane this week and was quite amazed by the new varieties that they have now. I bought some nice water cannas with red stems and a sacred lotus with lovely cream flowers. The heliconia selection has grown and they have some beautiful ones that grow to 3-4 metres, you can see them all in flower. They said that all of their plants flower from Northern NSW upwards. They also have a huge selection of gingers, heaps of bamboos and stacks of cannas. Their prices are still really good value. Horganics are the best! We revisited them just before christmas and got a couple of rostrata, jacquinii, hot rio nights, and kawochi (spelling?), and they've already grown a heap! They've all grown at least 30cm up, their stems have thickened beautifully and they all have a few new huge beautiful glossy leaves. We were also there a couple of months before that and got some gingers, some budhas belly bamboo and a sacred lotus. They're all such healthy plants and are doing so well. The lotus has completely taken over one end of the pond with the cannas at the other and the gingers and bamboo has thickened beautifully. We now have our own little tropical ecosystem humming along nicely and have attracted some beautiful birds, frogs, dragonflies, and butterflies. And our fish have bred from the original 4 to 36! Thanks Horganics, and we can't wait for the heliconias to develop themselves more :)

Wait until late Feb when James Munro comes to Sunnybank for his annual sale. He combines with Woombye Heliconias.
You can check out the sites at either Cooloola or Woombye Heliconias.
I always get something new despite having over 50 different Heliconias, 60 Gingers and over 30 Costus.

I don't have alot in the way of herbs...however, I could send you a good sized clump of mature Garlic Chives, I have a mint that has been in the family for many generations, it smells like spearment. I also have chocolate mint, although it would be cuttings, that maybe I could get roots on . I have different basils, but I sowed them from seed and they are still pretty small. I would be interested in the musa Basjoo or elephant ears. Maybe you might find something else on my list that would tempt you.

Hi JCR- I'd love to trade your plumeria for my brugs- I have both CG and Jam Yellow- they are my sweetest smelling brugs- mine will be ready to trade in the spring- let's exchange addresses and set it up for then! Can I give you all some advise on buying from a place so far away. Many of those companies will send you the plants, but they could be dead, or rotten by the time you get them. Many of those companies have no problem taking your money and they know you are not going to jump on a plane to go complain at them for sending you dead plants. But that is sometimes what they do and will always get away with it.

I have a 15 foot queen palm in the ground in the Virginia Beach area. This will be winter #2 for it. It survived 10 degrees several times last year with only damage to the outermost leaf edges (which of course took all damn summer before it finally looked better) by wrapping in plastic (basically big Saran wrap), then a long rope light (135 watts total) wound all the way to the top, then 2 plastic yard waste bags over the bundled top, and then plastic wrap again. I only turn on the lights sub-35 degrees. When I had a 10-day forecast that didn't include any sub-30 overnight lows I unwrapped it so it could get some fresh air, and then re-wrapped when sub-30 approached again. I have a Key Lime tree (winter #2) that survived with C9 christmas lights and 2 plastic yard bags, with a few 50 watt floodlights around the base. It was even flowering already by late February so it couldn't have been THAT miserable. I took the bag off when conditions were nice but then just put it back on when the going got rough. Currently I am getting a 7-foot lemon, 5-foot grapefruit, 8-foot cavendish banana, majesty palms, and pineapples (all those in the ground), papayas, avocados, and guava (little ones) through the winter in a temporary greenhouse structure heated mostly with floodlights but with extra electric heating when needed. It is maintained above 35. Oh and btw - I have always found the whole soaking avocados in water/toothpick thing to be completely unnecessary. I just shove the seed 2 inches deep into a 1-gallon pot of potting soil and leave it outside in the summer. In 3 weeks it's a 1-foot tall tree, 95% of the time. I have lost many to squirrels though - who don't know the seed is there until the plant comes up. Chicken wire may be needed. I even had one that I dropped in the kitchen and it split in half. My wife made me dig it out of the garbage and plant the halves. Whaddya know - each one grew into a tree. Soon. Oh and rather than buying avocados for seeds - ask a mexican restaurant if they'll save some for you. I'll bet an average mexican restaurant generates at least 50 seeds a day although a lot may be hacked up (but obviously splitting them in half doesn't stop anything!)

Does anyone know when James Munro is coming to Sunnybank and whereabouts in Sunnybank he'll be?

Very disappointed that Horganics never even bothered to reply to my email requesting a price list.

There are lots of other heliconias, gingers and costus that will grow in Brisbane, the trick is knowing whick ones. Try nqheliconias.com

I'd also love to hear some more details about Sunnybank in late Feb when they become available. Otherwise nqheliconias.com looks like another good option.

Rob that is disappointing about Horganics not replying to your email. I know we're not supposed to, but we always just turn up on a weekend and they're always either there or at the Chandler markets. They are cheap, and the reason I like them so much is because they're organic, I know they'll grow well (every plant we have from there has done fantastically); as opposed to some we've had from elsewhere which always struggled and were never really healthy plants.

Cooloola Heliconias will be at Sunnybank Pot and Plant Centre, Crn of Warrigal and Padstow Roads, Sunnybank on 24 th to 26 February from 9.00am. They always have a good selection of Costus, Gingers and Heliconias. All will grow in this area and are good quality.
I have no interest other than to recommend as all the plants I have bought have done well. I am not knocking Horganics as have previously invited them to sell at our 'Open Garden'. Just that Cooloola have a different selection.
