Building a Greenhouse?

Hi,

I'm a researcher with the popular Channel 7 Real Estate program 'Hot Property'. The show is hosted by Michael Caton from 'The Castle'.

We are currently in production on a new series and I am trying to hunt down someone about to start building their own backyard greenhouse. If you are about to start building a new greenhouse or know someone who is I would love to hear from you.

We are able to film stories all over Australia so location is not an issue.

I'm amazed there haven't been more responses to this! Plantsplus, it sounds to me like they might be going to follow you building your own greenhouse in your own yard.

Finally finished green house. Got a late start but all plants are doing well, especially the orchids. The tomato plants are about 4' tall but spindly and few fruit sets. I only get about 5 hours of sun a day but that suits the orchids, fuschias, begonias and bromeliads.

I put a link below that should help you do calculations. You'll need the surface area of each wall and the roof, then plug in the R-value of each wall's insulation. Estimate the outside temperature, and the calculator will tell you the BTUs required to keep the structure at whatever temperature you choose. Be prepared to be let down :( Any clear building material that makes a good greenhouse will also have a low r-value. The most expensive double-pane glass is only R2, and I think all the poly coverings come in less than that. BUT if you had shutters with R12 fiberglass in them that you could open and close, and a small electric heater, I think you'd do fine. Part of the problem with passive ideas is the weather, especially in the winter the sun likes to not come out for a week or two at a time, and some of those days the high is below freezing. With no sun, the water barrels don't heat up like they should. When they turn into chunks of ice, they become a cool sink, and not a hot sink. "My place is a little too dry and I think all of my plants would benefit from a higher humidity/temperature." I think you are wrong about humidity. Most herbs don't grow in the rain forest and subjecting them to high humidity will promote disease. The air temperature should be near 80 deg. F. to maximize photosynthesis. I suggest that you put a thermometer among your plants and drape/partially drape aluminized mylar sheet on the front and back of your shelves until you get the right temperature by controlling the ventilation. The heat from the T5 bulbs should be sufficient. The aluminized mylar will also increase the amount of light the herbs receive. Incidentally, in a darkened room, you will be able to see your plants through the aluminized mylar, sort of like a "one way mirror."

Amelie,

Really? You're surprised there have not been more responses? I've only watched less than 4-6 episodes of the show but there's no chance in hell I'd ever volunteer to be on it. The episodes I have generally been about people just selling houses but there was one with a couple building a shed on the side of their house - they basically mocked the hell out of these poor people when the shed did not go to plan. I remember at the time commenting to my beloved that you'd have to be mad to go to all that effort on camera and then have the show cut away to a smirking host drolly intoning something cutting like "oh dear - looks like these two had better stick to their day jobs".

Now, that's entirely my own opinion and I know there are a heap of people out there with more talent than I when it comes to construction. The two people I mention were, I think, white collar workers and therefore had about as much talent as me when it comes to swinging a hammer. I, like them, would be able to measure and plan the design and cutting but would be brought undone by something simple on the day, under the glare of the watchful camera. If I were planning to build a greenhouse, there's not a chance in hell I'd personally volunteer to be on camera doing it. I suspect the poor response so far might be due to others feeling the same way.

On the other hand, if you've got skill levels that would let you do this construction relatively easily, and you want to be famous (for a night), go for it. I'll sit down and watch the show if it's a GW regular.

Ditto MooQuack. I agree wholeheartedly with you. The whole segment seemed to be there just to poke fun at people having a go. Not very Aussie! There's no way I would be volunteering to go on that particular show. Dee.

No I haven't seen it (I thought they might pay for it, or build it for you or at least help). You know what some people are like - they'll do anything to get on the telly!
