Pruning Mandevilla laxa (chilean jasmine)

Hi all,

Does anybody know how hard you can prune a mandevilla laxa without killing it? It is looking so messy with all sorts of dead bits inside and I really would like to start afresh.

Dear Dee,
I pruned my Brazilian jasmine to soil level as it was totally infested with scale, it is now 2 feet high ,sporting several lush green shoots from the base. They do have a bulbous root system, as in water food storage bulbs, hence their ability to do so well in dry areas, which usually means that they will reshoot. The wholesale nursery I used to deal with, cut back any unsold stock severely, for the next season, so I can confidently say , be ruthless!

As far as I know, scent for Chilean Mandevillea is pretty reliable across the board, and you shouldn't have to worry about getting a scentless plant. They grow and flower quite reliably here in California, and from ones I've seen, the warmer the summers, the more blooms, and they tend to bloom less nearer the coast with cooler summer nights and more fog. I live near the coast myself, and suspect the fragrance carries further with warmer temps, but they always smell quite nice if you put your face up close.

If we're talking Mandevilla laxa... be patient. Looking dead when dormant is normal, nothing to worry about - of course it also looks dead when it's dead, which could be the case if it got really cold where you are. More likely it's fine and will get going when spring is well underway... it likes heat. As for other plants... certain things are already growing (some Clematis, for example). Certain other plants don't make an appearance until July. So it really depends on the specific plant.
