Tree ID Please - This time with leave close-up

Hello again,

Jan, thanks for welcoming me. This was indeed my first posting and I meant to attach several pictures but couldn't manage. So here is a close-up of leaves, unopen flowers and seedpots, both appearing at the same time.

Hi Lisa..And many Wecomes to the Forum...Lisa I don't see a pic there either...
Try and have another go and preview before you submit.
That way you know if the pic is there. If you want to post multiple pics.
You have to have your pics somewhere on the Web like Photobucket.
Cheers..MM.

"Nyctinasty (nyc = night or darkness, nastic = firm or pressed close) is the specific movement of leaves or flowers in a daily pattern, open during the day and closed at night. Nyctinastic movements are accomplished by the flow of water in and out of specific cells in the pulvini (swellings, singular is pulvinus) at the base of the petioles (the stalk that attaches the leaf blade to the stem). It is not unlike our muscle movements in that there is an extensor and a flexor pair. When K+ and Cl- are pumped into the extensor cells on the bottom of the pulvini, they become hypertonic and water follows the ions through osmosis. This causes the extensor cells to swell due to increased turgor pressure." - http://biologicalexceptions.blogspot.com/2011/11/plants-that-dont-sleep-will-take-dirt.html "A pulvinus is also sometimes called a geniculum." - https://www.boundless.com/biology/definition/pulvini/

It would not surprise me. Not that I could identify poison anything, really. There's so much foliage everywhere. I'm so lost! I know it'll be even worse in the spring when I have to start identifying spring plants! But it's a fun new adventure. And I'm loving it. The yard is 70% of the reason we bought this house. Give or take :) Does Black Gum seem likely, then? I've Googled, and they are gorgeous in the fall! I was thinking about getting rid of it, but now I'm thinking maybe not. If it turns out to be colorful or fruit-bearing or flowering, I'll probably keep it. Even though I suspect it got its start as an accidental tree that no one pulled up. Just kind of a weird place for it (says the lady who doesn't know what she's talking about!).

Wall down, should we close it up a little or leave wide open?

I think that small houses can benefit from boundary definition to a greater extent than larger houses can, sometimes. (think of Sarah Susanka) Many people here take out the small vestibules here in their 12-15 foot wide houses, for example, thinking it will make the front room larger. It doesn't, because with a wall there you can back any sort of furniture right up to the wall, where it is technically inches away from the front door, but with the wall gone, people will not put something that close to the front door, and Never something large that would seem to block or crowd it. In a large house it doesn't matter as much. You can leave a 3 foot gap for visual separation and float pieces away from the walls. In this situation I would easily place an end table or the arm of a sofa close to a small wall there, because the wall would indicate that it was "in another room/space". Without the wall there, I would not put it so close because it might visually look like it is straddling between rooms.

Hi everyone and thank you for the info on attaching pictures and to Heather for identifying the tree in my first posting.

I have surfed the web with the botanical name stated by Heather and the tree is indeed Radermacheria sinica 'China Doll'. It really never occured to me that it could be a 'house plant' turning into this stunning tree when planted outside. Thanks again.

I agree that it's Radermachera sinica. I suspect the name 'China Doll' is not a cultivar name but merely a trade name for the species -- nurseries thought Radermachera would be too difficult!

Note correct spelling Radermachera, which returns 269 hits on a Google image search, whereas the erroneous Radermacheria returns 8. Fortunately Google prompts for the correct one.
