A rouge native? Or good native?

I see this tree a lot next to the motorways around Brisbane and I quite like the contrast of these softer green leaves to the more common darker green. But what is it?

It's one of the Wattle species, very common. They plant many types around the highways, freeways.

They should be flowering in the next few months and that is the time to identify them. By the spray of flowers

It is great you are keeping your garden green with natives. Many of the native plants are protected here in Michigan--no picking Loosestrifes, Queen Anne's Lace, and we have a shortage of Joe Pye Eye Weed and violas--so, I embrace all my natives that I can! Keep up the good work--and get your hands in the soil--somehow that is how I find my solace to dealing with stress (especially between the books, if you know what I mean). Good luck, Pam! If you see something on my small (newly started garden) and I am a newbe on the forum, e-mail me at pconnole@aol.com and let me know--more than likely SABSE will work just fine with some of the seeds.

Good california natives for understory of Blue Atlas Cedar?

In all my experience planting around a Cedrus deodorant Atlantica, I've never encountered mu h in the way of surface roots. The bigger issue will be the seed cones which fall constantly and can look messy or cat h between leaves of plants such as agaves or bromeliads. That's why I'd suggested grasses as a good choice, or fine textured foliage shrubs such as manzanitas. I'm willing to bet that a good long soaking over several days would make that area very easy to dig. Cedars in general are usually easy to plant around as the roots go deep.

what is it?....hot-ass native fir native to n. california.

Yep, Sitka Spruce Picea sitchensis. Remember spruce cones are erect at pollination (more efficient pollen gathering ability), it is only later as they develop towards maturity that they turn down to become pendulous (for more efficient seed release). "Does the old chestnut about flat needles versus round needles work for all species?" - no; some spruces (e.g. Sitka, Brewer's, Serbian) have flat needles, some firs (e.g. White) don't. Resin

Good native tree choice for yard?

Are you looking for evergreen or one that's bare part of the year? That's the BIG first choice. Cooking in the afternoon heat can be tough. - Lacey Oaks are EXTREMELY hard to find in larger landscape sizes in our area (Austin/SA) They're just not that well known and are SLOW. Larger specimens are usually only available from wholesale places. Here's a picture of some I looked at about an hour south of SA. Unfortunately I didn't have room for the Lacey on my trailer. These are 24in boxes. I opted for the even harder to find Canby Oak in 24in box. 24in Box Lacey Oak Nearly all the local nursery Lacey Oaks (not many) looked terrible. I may head back to get that Lacey next spring. Mexican, Bigtooth or Caddo Maples are all options but good luck finding any of those locally. I ordered all of mine and none bigger than 5g size. Bigtooth and Caddo are SLOW. Mexican Sugar is faster. Have you considered the Monterrey Oak (Q. polymorpha)? It's becoming common down here and seems to do very well. It's one of the faster growing oaks I've seen.

Thank you Nod. Yes I think I've spotted buds just recently. I like this tree a lot actually.

Any advance from anyone on which species?

Hah! Acacia podalyriifolia. Classified as a weed just about everywhere outside it's native Queensland! Ah well. Lucky I'm in Brisbane...

That's it, sometimes called the Mt Morgan Wattle. I had it in my yard when it was more 'shrubby'.

I chose it for the colour contrast against the general green foliage of most shrubs. Worked well.

They only have a life of around 5 to 6 years, I think borers finally get them.

As a point of interest it was planted around the walking tracks of a State Forrest park on the north side of Brisbane. Never a problem.

So my thoughts are that it is probably regarded as a pest in fertile areas and areas where he seeds may be spread down watercourses.

Cool Nod. Contrast is what I'm thinking too for my front border in Carina on the southeast side of Brisbane. And the winter flowers (apparently).
