A rouge native? Or good native?

I see this tree a lot next to the motorways around Brisbane and I quite like the contrast of these softer green leaves to the more common darker green. But what is it?

It's one of the Wattle species, very common. They plant many types around the highways, freeways.

They should be flowering in the next few months and that is the time to identify them. By the spray of flowers

Thanks all, I am looking to fill in basically the areas that are on the slopes, that currently grass is growing into as a place holder until I can get the beds set up. See bottom picture, anything shaded is what will have Perennials. I am starting to collect Milk Jugs now. What is the best time to start, before the first frost or after? I know I'm going to have some deer and rabbit pressure, but I have neighbors with perennials, and I'm hoping "natives" will be a little bit more resistant. Greenthumbz, those are gorgeous pics! I've heard that there are a couple of trees that are not native to North America but are used by significant numbers of native insects. 1) Malus/Crabapples - native, hybrid, or exotic, Douglas Tallamy's book stated that the leaf chemistry is so similar that North american insects will use all species. This certainly bears true in my experience. I've got lots of crabs, a few specimens and a crazy wild thicket full of them in back,and they are bird magnets, not just for the fruits in the fall but for the nectar and insects in spring and summer. 2) Picea abies/Norway spruce - don't have any personal experience, but was told this by an ornithology student at Cornell who was doing a study on the subject

To take out the location-loaded terms 'native' and 'cultivated', I think what you're trying to ask is, "can hybrids occur between species from different continents"; the answer is yes, provided the species are closely related enough. There are plenty of examples. In Prunus, the hybrid between P. avium (Europe) and P. emarginata (N America) is known, recently named Prunus Ã pugetensis. I'd doubt that P. serotina could cross with P. avium though, as they are in different sections of the genus (sect. Padus, and sect. Cerasus, respectively). Resin

Thank you Nod. Yes I think I've spotted buds just recently. I like this tree a lot actually.

Any advance from anyone on which species?

Hah! Acacia podalyriifolia. Classified as a weed just about everywhere outside it's native Queensland! Ah well. Lucky I'm in Brisbane...

Yes, I spotted it for sale in Bunnings today, A. podayriifolia. Nice looking foliage. A weed, Aye. Thanks Blackbeantree, I wont buy it.

That's it, sometimes called the Mt Morgan Wattle. I had it in my yard when it was more 'shrubby'.

I chose it for the colour contrast against the general green foliage of most shrubs. Worked well.

They only have a life of around 5 to 6 years, I think borers finally get them.

As a point of interest it was planted around the walking tracks of a State Forrest park on the north side of Brisbane. Never a problem.

So my thoughts are that it is probably regarded as a pest in fertile areas and areas where he seeds may be spread down watercourses.

Cool Nod. Contrast is what I'm thinking too for my front border in Carina on the southeast side of Brisbane. And the winter flowers (apparently).
