Your plant sounds exactly like I. japonica and their is a variety called Fairy, or Fairyland? Good to see your neighbour had a correctly labelled plant. These often come incorrectly labelled as japanese iris, or Iris fimbriata or a number of other weird names. They will take like shade, morning sun, and need protection from heavy frost. Well drained soil, but not dry, and a good organic mulch, but no lime. They are tough but heavy frosts may ruin the bloom. Cheers, Jan
