Gean, thank you. I also have the bush form of Dev. It does not bloom quite as much, though when it does the blooms are equally beautiful and smelly. I love bush shots as well, even though I am not all that adept at using a camera. Masha, Jaune is not even in full bloom yet. I will try to take more pictures when that happens. Thanks. Florence, I am happy I could brighten your day as you have brightened mine many a time. Organicgardendreams, I am so happy you like Dev. It is my favorite rose after Marechal Niel. When young, it exhibits some PM, but it does improve as it ages. I expect it will always get a little PM, but it is never enough to put me off. I just spritz it with water in the dryer months. Other that that, Dev is extremely healthy and I do not spray. Randy, Lady H is one of my favs, especially for the color of the foliage. In early spring, it is completely burgundy/plum with little or no green. It definitely adds some variety in the garden. I am happy you like her.

Thanks, everyone. Any thoughts on Climbing Devoniensis or Solfaterre/"Sam Tucker"? And how bad is the thorniness on the climbing Maman Cochets? I love those tea blooms, but managing thorns on top of a rose tunnel sounds daunting. I'd love to try Cl. Lady Hillingdon, but bush LH died for me last year. The canes got blackish at the tips and then down to the ground. She was a one year old from a band. Do you think I should I try her again? Sherryocala, the climate here is hard to describe. We don't get the regular dense fogs of San Francisco or that people get near the beach along the whole Calif. coast, but we do get what locals call "June gloom" where cloudy cover doesn't burn off until late morning during the spring. The summers can be quite hot as we're on a little knoll in (mostly) full sun. So far, Reve d'Or is doing better than any of our other climbers, but we're trying to be patient. William Allen Richardson, which some say is a sport of R d'O, also looks a winner here in its first year from a band. Phyllis Bide is on another corner of our rose tunnel and in one year from a band has almost reached the roof of the tunnel and is now putting out lovely blooms.

I have this beautiful rose and this was the third year. All I can say is WOW! She bloomed for almost a month, was covered with buds and open roses and smelled wonderful. I have a one story cottage and Devoniensis is growing on a front corner and one cane has climbed up the side to the roof peak. There are also canes going around to the front windows and I am training another to meet a first year New Dawn over an arch on the corner. I also have the shrub Devoniensis in the front yard and tho it does bloom, there are only two small canes and most of the time not many leaves on this rose. The roses that do bloom on the shrub are nice but I may be taking it out next year. The climbing Devoniensis is a power rose. But I love her!

I agree, Devoniensis has a reputation for staying small for what seems like forever. I have mine in a very modest space, and I'm hoping it can stay there. I believe that teas can be pruned to some degree without looking as though they'd had a butch haircut. Not every tea needs a 10 x 10 foot space, and Devoniensis may not need it for decades. It could stay in a large pot for the rest of its life if it had to. As Jeri mentioned, Lady Hillingdon is on the smaller side, although I've seen pictures of a large specimen here and there. Westside Road Cream Tea doesn't get especially huge. Duchesse de Brabant is not a giant either and is gorgeous. I say if you want a tea get a tea. Just stay away from the known giants like Le Vesuve and Mrs. B.R. Cant and you'll be fine. In my experience pruning makes them put out lots of new growth so I wouldn't worry about making them unsightly. Ingrid
