Pest control - organic/natural deterrents

I've been spending many weeks planting a wide range of native shrubs and trees onto my land. They are doing really well with the exception that some are being eaten by insects and grasshoppers. This is land which is set aside on a 'Land for Wildlife' Scheme. I'm passionate about the fauna as well as the flora and whereas I'm happy for all the insects to come in for lunch, when the plants have become more established, I would prefer that these plants put on some growth first! I would like to deter the munching of young succulent growth if possible. I was wondering if anyone had tried organic/natural deterrents with any success? I was thinking about chilli/garlic sprays for instance? Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you Jan
