Hi Sal and welcome, I've sent you an email with a little info that might be useful for someone with a bare block. Xmas is not a bad time to get started. You'd certainly be able to put in some of the early varieties of things like beans, capsicum, chilli, eggplant and tomato. Lettuce seems to grow most of the year here and I believe the chinese veggies do extremely well as do berries of all sorts, plums, peaches, apples, pomegranates. Citrus is more of a challenge and requires planning to provide a protected environment. Anyway, see you when you get here. Ray

I don't have a lot of succulents and some of them are in my winter holding area. But these are a couple. Group of three. Two echeverias and some sort of tiny sedum. This planter was very happy outdoors all summer. Now it's under a grow light on my plant shelf. And I've had this trailing aloe in this mid-century modern planter for years. I've cut it back and propagated it more times than I can remember. It's almost bonsai-esque now. There isn't much else in the planter with it but I see some space that may be available to plant something new!

Shrouded in fog: Volunteer trash tree--a box elder which reminds me of the apple-throwing trees in the Wizard of OZ: The base of the tall 'mushroom' in the middle is a box elder stump. You can see the roots which had spread in search of water. The tiny concrete mushroom in the lower right was a gift from my late sister: Grandson's portal to ... somewhere. Really an old wagon wheel missing its spokes, guarded by friendly gnomes. The box elder on the right and the wild cherry on the left came up between tumbled blocks so I left them for shade: I left a small mound of dirt and a piece of the old stump: The back side of the stump. When her house was sold, I brought them to my block garden, where they look as if they are climbing the tulip tree. Fire circle--under the firewood is the stump of a wild cherry tree.
