Streptocarpus hybrid. There are dozens of these in a range of colours through pink to blue and purple. Like the related African violets they come from species native to the mountains of East Africa, mostly growing on rocks. Here in Sydney they grow vigorously in summer in pots, tolerating neglect as long as they get water. They die back in winter-spring and look almost dead, but keep coming back year after year.

Many thanks for that. I've done a search and found lots of interesting info, including how to propagate from leaf cuttings - like african violets, of course.

The one's I took by division when I repotted havn't done very well so far but the original plants are looking the best they ever have. They draw lots of comments from visitors and now I can actually name them!
