Notocactus Uebelmannianus seeds?

hello all, im new here - i didnt know that there was an Australian cactus forum (ive been posting on a forum full of Americans, so i felt a bit confused). i have a Notocactus Uebelmannianus which is flowering, and i was wondering when the seeds will be ready for planting, when i should plant them, and the right conditions for them to germinate in are. anyone know much about seeds?

Couldn't resist this.....I wonder if Americans get confused when they visit this forum? Just kidding Joel. You'll find a wealth of information on both forums. Don't stop visiting us "Yanks". About the only difference between us is our growing seasons.

Not really JohnH (G'day by the way). Some differences between us are...cookies=biscuits, elevator=lift, sidewalk=footpath, pop/soda=fizzy drink/soft drink, airplane=aeroplane, mall=plaza/shopping centre, fall=autumn, aloo-minum=aluminium - ok, thats all i can think of. sorry, im just messing around. overall its us Aussies (or "Ossies" as you would say ;-P) who are always crawling to the Americans anyway, so i can't really bag you guys. i'll keep posting on the other forums aswell, just to keep my multicultural experience alive ;-). anyway, thanks for your post, and goodluck to "Dubya" - he's better than John Kerry anyday. anyways, cya!

I thought many Parodia were lumped into Notocactus. No? I don't think Howard's plant is Notocactus roseoluteus. Its flowers are larger, with not so pointy petals & the pokeys stick straight out (rather than hug the plant). Blooms are lighter pink as well. Here's a photo of a friend's plant: Notocactus uebelmannianus blooms change color as they open. The blooms on Howard's plant are larger opened than mine ever were. But I believe that is what you have. I had 2 similar plants. The blooms never fully opened on the 1 seen below when I took pix. The other I missed seeing blooms altogether! :( I believe Parodia werneri is a synonym for Notocactus uebelmannianus, as is Parodia crassigibba.

I always repot any plant I get. It serves two purposes... First, it gives me a chance to look at the roots. Sometimes, they're rootbound like the one's you got, and sometimes they're greatly overpotted. In either case, it gives me the opportunity to decide if it needs a bigger/smaller pot and to look to see if the roots are healthy. Second, I want my plants in my own mix because I'm accustomed to how my mix dries out. I don't grow the other two, but Haworthias do fine on a windowsill, east is ideal. They don't need a lot of light to be happy. Anytime you water plants, you should water until it comes out the drainage holes and dump the excess water. Light watering (or misting) can be hard on the roots as only the top part of the roots get watered. If you want to avoid getting water on the plant, use one of those ear irrigation bulbs you can buy at a drugstore. I use one of those to water plants that are so tightly packed in the pot that it's hard to pour water without getting it everywhere. Good luck with your new babies! Denise in Omaha
