Surigao refers to two provinces in the island of Mindanao, in the Philippines, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Relatively sparsely populated and a bit mountainous, the area is home to probably more undescribed species. I had referred the ID to Jim Cootes, author of Orchids of the Philippines, because I had acquired them as Bulbophyllum medusae, but at that time I had thought that they were more likely Bulbophyllum vaginatum. Mr Cootes told me that if there are hairs on the inner petals then it is Bulbophyllum surigaense and not vaginatum. The close-up photo shows the hairs.

Bulbophyllum lobbii will get too big for most terrariums but Bulbophyllum vaginatum would be a very good candidate. I have lots of experience with Bulbophyllums so if you do some searching on the net and have any questions just ask. There are many other genera of orchids that will do very well so I would recommend looking for flowers that you like and then figure out if there are miniature versions of those types. One thing I can't stress enough is that you pay attention to light requirements because many orchids will never flower in the terrarium and many also have flower spikes that are too long and make them poor candidates as well. This is a good site that has a list of vendors in the U.S. Take a look at Andy's Orchids and Oak Hill Gardens because they have lots of great plants at good prices. Feel free to ask if you have any questions about other plants and I will try to help you with figuring out their needs.
