Hi OO, I'll make it simple. These are hardy, rugged plants, one needn't worry or look to be so precise & exact for them. I grow indoors only in NYC & my kitchen window is all Aloes on a West windowsill on top of a working radiator. Bottom line -- the maximum light you can give it (starting gradually of course); can be direct sun, but also fine w/ bright indirect. I tend to leave mine alone & pretty much ignore them. I'd suggest you do nothing to yours for at least a month, let them become accustomed to their new home, then maybe into a terra cotta pot, especially if you tend to overwater (don't know if you do or not, a general suggestion). FYI: in these plant circles of ours AV = African Violets, almost always; otherwise we just say Aloes or Aloe vera, but save AV for African Violet (see how long that is, that's why we say AV). Hi Jonas, FYI, your mix looks kind of peaty, if it were my plant, I'd change that mix to something much more gritty or if that's all you've got, I'd add at least 40% perlite or pumice to make it fast draining; that mix looks slow to drain, which increases chances of rot. Having explained above that I only grow indoors, in MY home, brown on Aloes would be a possible sign of rot, brown on Aloes is NOT a good thing, tho' you seem to think it is. Brown is not a winter color for Aloes (unless I misunderstand your post). They're supposed to be green like in the pix you've shown, not brown (at least when grown indoors). I wouldn't be in a hurry to remove the pups; I like to ensure they're old enough to move out on their own before I do that & also, aesthetically, I prefer the look of the crowded pot like yours.

A.dichotoma will fool you into thinking it survived when in fact it's on a sloooooow death that could take 3-4 years. I have one still plump stemmed,no leaves,no roots. I wait every year ,and eventually doesnt root and something knocks it out of it's pot-like cats!. A second in ground plant lost most of its leaves this wet cool winter in -yes- part shade. It's a sunny spot in summer, but winter sun isnt enough and with rain it struggles. But maybe the most terrible sorry story is a local Nursery had a huge boxed plant-10-12' tall or so with a huge, wide trunk..developed rot. The owner than transplanted it down to a 24" pot. Then, after two years it died. It hadnt re-rooted but managed to look alive all that time till the end.

Here are a few of my favorite Aloes... I had to stop at the letter 'H' as there were getting too many photos... can finish up some other day. Aloe aculeata Aloe alooides Aloe barberae (if you got the room) Aloe betsileensis Aloe broomii (this is variety tarkaensis, but the other variety is nice, too) Aloe cameronii (mine never get quite this red- I water them too much) Aloe capitata Aloe cryptopoda (var. wickensii) Aloe dichotomas in the landscape (this is one of my very favorite Aloes) Aloe excelsa Aloe fleurentiorum (if you like weird colored Aloes) Aloe framesii (this photo doesn't do them justice) Aloe globulogemma (if you like unique Aloe flowers) Aloe harlana (this is the real thing, not that A hemmingii sold everywhere as Aloe harlana) Aloe hereroensis

Thank you Izrddr, I was always insecure about that ID, It came to me as a possible A . ibitiensis, so I always put the "?" there. I guess I should go and change it on my flicker account. I have been using that as the way I keep track. I am always loosing tags. Do you agree with the ID of the first picture. That one came without an IS and I saw a very similar aloe on XW just the other day. Italways looked KINDA like A deltoideodonta but not quite. I always thought it was a hybrid and then I saw his and it seemed a good match. I am still just a wild guesser.
