I live in Northern Michigan, zone 5, and I plant onion plants in May, they are harvested in August or September. I do try to plant onions that will store well, and last year the red ones took longer to mature, but they kept the longest, well into December. Grandpa grew up in Canada, north of Toronto, so colder than here and so I imagine he farmed in Michigan much like he farmed in Canada, as that would be what he knew. I remember he would build "cold frames" out of bales of hay or straw, make a square with 4 bales, fill with dirt, cover with a sheet if it got really cold. He was a widower with 7 children to feed, so I think early and late crops were pretty important to him. I also remember he had some old salvaged windows that he used to put on top of some of those bales, building a makeshift "greenhouse" to grow more fragile plants. I also get onion plants from Dixondale, as well as leeks, which do extremely well here. Annie

Trees are grown in large containers every day. Fairly surprised Ms. Colwell is so uninformed and still feel compelled to comment. LOL indeed! Just sayin' I am a landscape designer, and landscaper for many years. I on occassion do things out of the ordinary when necessary and for fun and experimentation. The containers were designed to block utilities. So far looks great. I know gardengal has some experience with containers...was it little gem magnolias? We've discussed some of this before. I made self watering containers, consulted certified arboriists and the medium will be heavy bark base trying to match what these tress are growin in now. Will be well draining with perlite for guaranteed air space. I live in central Texas. BTW, I could do a smaller size grow bag but would prefer not to have to bump up again. The tree in question is a Feelin Blue dwarf Cypress.. I am using grow bags for the reason I am using them to wick water. So far is working really well. Sorry no pix just now. I have three growbags, the central one will hold the dwf trees. As I said, just not wanting to bump up later if I can get away with going bigger now.

the plant in the bag should be irrelevant.. for the most part ... though i also hope someone else has tried clems specifically ... lots of hosta peeps use tree bags .. under maple trees in a usually failed attempt to try to outsmart the aggressive maples.. and its not easily ... and usually eventually fails... but one thing for sure.. NEVER leave the bag exposed on the top .. just like you dont leave such with a ball and burlap plant.. the exposed part.. will wick moisture out from the entire root system..and the plant will die due to drought... im impressed with a collection of 28 plants.. and like i stated in your other post.. i would use pots... i simply dont understand how you can carry plants around town in bags .. it would basically be bare rooting them .. and i mentioned perfect timing... or having the new place in advance.... so you could move them from one garden to the other and plant immediately ... you might want to replicate this post in perennial forum ... shrubs.. trees.. etc ... ken

you will stress the be jesus out of them this year.. and then again next year ... why not just leave them alone this year.. and just stress them next year ... perhaps one might consider root pruning them .. but since you just planted them last season.. im not sure that would be a benefit either ... i would search out pots 2 or 3 sizes larger than what they were bought in.. and plan on using a pot.. rather than trying to hoik trees around town in a bag ... it would be no better than bare rooting them.... which would be very feasible.. if the timing could be perfect ... 6 to 8 weeks prior to dormancy break ... frankly.. when i moved way back when.. i dragged 1650 pots of plants.. trees.. shrubs.. etc ... the cost was phenomenal.. as well as the labor ... i should have left a lot more stuff behind ... potting media alone cost me hundreds ... nut luckily.. i hit recycle bins for most of the pots i needed ... unless you have very expensive rare stock.. you might want to rethink taking them with you ... but if you insist.. we can help ... imo.. just do it then.. and not mess with them a year in advance .... ken
