I'm in Oregon, zone 6b. I brought about 20 tropical hibiscus inside and am trying a variety of lights mixed with sunlight. I also have them in a room that's kind of closed off from the rest of the house and will stay very warm all winter. I have humidifiers going as well. So much information had my head spinning so I'm trying a bit of everything. I trimmed what seemed to me a lot while leaving plenty left on the plants. Almost immediately they all had new growth and blooms. I have rehab plants that have never bloomed before blooming. They all seem to thrive and it makes me so happy and proud! Unfortunately I discovered spider mites on a different kind of plant that I wasn't as careful about making sure I did what I could do to not bring pests inside. I know I have created a very comfy environment for bugs and diseases. Ugh! I hope I learned my lesson and can get the infestation under control. Overall I'm really looking forward to beautiful flowers all year round!

Graywings, Bibb lettuce is the type I see here sold in those clamshells. As long as the roots exist and have been kept moist, they can be planted and will grow more leaves. I planted the remains of our local hothouse Bibb variety about 2 weeks ago and they are almost ready to pick. My daughter allowed red leaf lettuce (greenhouse purchased) to go to seed last year and this year she has several beautiful heads. here's my lettuce surrounded by pepper plants in the grow box. We can’t have a garden here because the deer, rabbits and other critters have a field day.

I'm going to trim "Audrey" way, way back, pull off all the leaves, and put them on a baking sheet on the lowest setting of my oven with the door ajar to dry. I'll try some recipes next week and report back on the flavor. I can also try some fresh leaves in tomato sauce. Currently, when I cook with recao, also known as culantro I use a lot. It's the main ingredient in soffrito. Many find it too strong, I can't get enough. Maybe I'll grow to like the strong scent and flavor of Cuban Oregano.

I live in Northern Michigan, zone 5, and I plant onion plants in May, they are harvested in August or September. I do try to plant onions that will store well, and last year the red ones took longer to mature, but they kept the longest, well into December. Grandpa grew up in Canada, north of Toronto, so colder than here and so I imagine he farmed in Michigan much like he farmed in Canada, as that would be what he knew. I remember he would build "cold frames" out of bales of hay or straw, make a square with 4 bales, fill with dirt, cover with a sheet if it got really cold. He was a widower with 7 children to feed, so I think early and late crops were pretty important to him. I also remember he had some old salvaged windows that he used to put on top of some of those bales, building a makeshift "greenhouse" to grow more fragile plants. I also get onion plants from Dixondale, as well as leeks, which do extremely well here. Annie
