Garden Tours on Long Island this summer!

Does anyone know of any garden tours on the Island this summer coming up? 7/10 Patchogue Garden Club is having one...$12 a ticket...first time I am going .... and St Peter's By The Sea Episcopal Church has brought back theirs... 7/17/2004.... this one is great $18 by mail...and I think $20 at the door. Located at 500 South Country Rd, Bay Shore. They have had a tea and raffle with it in the past.

Has your club tried the LIRR's Sunken Forest trip yet? I'm hoping to do that one day when I'm in NYC.

Glad you folks enjoyed it. The coneflowers seem to be popular with others as well. So far, all have over-wintered here though we don't get severe weather like you folks do in the rest of the country. The hardest thing they had to endure was about thirty inches of rain from November to May. All of the coneflowers you see here are in their second or third year. The gigantic pink flowering mound in pic #7 was planted two years ago and now it is exploding. There are just a TON of flowers coming. This is another part of the coneflower difference here, these are the FIRST wave of flowers from my plants as Summer comes late here(and stays into October many years). The double-dark red/orange cone flowers are 'Hot Papaya'. I'll be glad to save you a seedhead Dax, and it will help if you remind me here or email me around October/November. Is this how they propogate? I'd love to have more. Ken, still a few projects left but the only major project is the grass which is gone probably in the Fall of 2012, replaced by rock paths, a sitting area and perhaps a water feature. I plan on having NO grass at all after 2013/2014. Ken, the conifer I think you're referring to in pic#22 is a Picea glehnii cultivar that Bob Fincham contributed to the garden. I'll have to look up the cultivar name. I'll work on some 'before pics' as well. This is the best I have for now: After. -Will

What a a well thought out landscape and lovely collection of plants. I so love your sidewalk planting - so much more interesting than a lawn. I think your Sasaella will be fine, so many plants are wrongly zoned anyway. I grow Sasaella albostriata and it is perfectly hardy for me. From the looks of the perennial plants you are growing, there really doesn't seem to be any zone difference at all between Zone 5 and Zone 3.

Too late for today but I visited the Chichester NH garden on Gavin Hill yesterday. My husband enjoyed seeing the buildings. The early 1800s brick home was originally a hotel. Kitchen garden was enclosed by a wonderful tall hedge (owner has been gardening for 30 years) with a gorgeous climbing hydrangea covered entrance. Deep perennial bed. Wonderful views. Nice beds lining the final part of the driveway. etc. The owner said the garden is also on the Chichester garden tour which will be held 7/20, rain date 7/21. The Lane Garden in Canterbury is wonderful with strong Japanese influence, exposed ledges and lots of granite. It might be on the local garden tour which is how I saw it the first time. The owner gives a guided tour. Fortnam gardens is an extreme garden with lots of tropical on a fairly typical small suburban lot. The owner is a wonderful artist and photographer as well. The water feature alone is fantastic plus I love her garden accents. I think she has over 300 pots planted in addition to her landscape. Not much lawn left. She now has to use space in a commercial greenhouse to winter over plants. Used to just use her basement. I'm not sure if she posts on the perennial forum anymore. Stunning would be an apt word for her garden.

Thanks all! I have to tell you a story about those fairy gardens. My garden club had a master gardener come give a talk on Fairy Gardens back in February. Some of us, including me, actually went out and planted them. I found a little gnome at Big Lots to put in mine since with me having three boys - I don't think they would appreciate the feminine touches of the girly fairies. The lady who did the ones in the photos above said she and her husband went on a mission looking for "fairy stuff" for their gardens. But, she said they didn't dare ask any of the clerks at the stores for "fairy stuff" since they were afraid they might get the wrong idea - especially her husband. I mean, can you imagine a guy going into a store asking where they keep their "fairy stuff"? :D

According to their brochure, Long Island Railroad did not offer specific train/tour packages to the sunken forest at Sailor's Haven in Fire Island National Seashore this year. However, they did offer day trips that sound wonderful to other places. You might want to check them out for similar tours next year:

You don't need an organized tour to visit the sunken forest. Take the LIRR to Sayville, and hop on a Colonial or Village transport van for $3.00 that will get you to Sayville Ferry in about four minutes. The vans and/or cabs wait at the train station to meet every train. The Sayville ferries go to either Cherry Grove, the Pines or Sailor's Haven:

Although the boardwalks and trails of the sunken forest are open year-round, the Sailor's Haven visitor's center, snack bar and ranger tours are closed until next spring. From late spring to late summer, there are weekly free tours and other activities, some focused on kids. They have had to cut down on their programs and staff in recent years, due to funding cuts (sadly, this trend won't likely be changed for the next four years).

It is possible to take a ferry year-round from Sayville to Cherry Grove ($12.00 round trip). The sunken forest area is about a mile and a half walk west from Cherry Grove dock, along the ocean-side beach. One severe limitation of a winter trip is that the last returning ferry is at 3:40 PM which does not leave too much time for a nice visit. Still, there is great beauty here in winter. There are no hotels or motels open in Cherry Grove in winter, so you are pretty much stuck with doing a day trip. You could take a water taxi from Sayville or Bay Shore directly to Sailor's Haven and come and go when you please, but this is quite expensive.

The sunken forest is a remarkable and unique place. The boardwalk trails go through an old holly forest (which appears to be sunken because it is at the bottom of wooded dunes, but it is not below sea level) as well as marshland and dunes. It does seem that most people who go to Sailor's Haven in the summer come to go to the great beach, which has a lifeguard. There are also changing rooms and a bathroom.

For the last few years I've attended the garden tour sponsored by the Nassau Fine Arts museum. It's a little pricey, but the tours are absolutely divine, lunch is included and the price is almost completely tax deductible. The first one I attended was in September 2001 and we toured houses in the Hamptons; other tours (held in June) were in Brookville, Sands Point and this past June, Centre Island (no...we didn't go to Billy Joel's house).

By the way...the museum has a beautiful formal garden which I highly recommend.
