Cut back ornamental grass too early--Little Bunny?

I had six good size clumps of Pennisetum Alopecuroides Little Bunny grass that were planted in Spring of 2006 and performed well through the fall. They were planted in good loamy well drained soil (zone 6) next to dianthus (no problems with the dianthus) and the grasses were planted high up and had extensive root systems (purchased as one gallon pots). Some of them came back but a lot of them had a donut effect and only came back as a ring of green with a dead center or mostly dead. I cut them back to one inch high in early spring and noted that there was green inside under the dead growth from the prior season. After my cutting them in February 2007,we had several hard frosts following some warm spells. I think my cutting back too early caused the early demise of some of these grasses? Can anyone comment on ornamental grass cutting and care on this species?
