How high is your fence, what's your fence material(timber/brick/paling???) and what's underneath where you plan to put the pots (ground/cement/paving????) and what direction does the fence face.
Will the plants have something to support them/cling to? like lattice or ???

Just wondering how far to the pool as sometimes fallen flowers can be more of a problem for a pool that fallen leaves.

Thanks Alison. The fence is about 2m high, it's west facing, super 66 / asbestos, on the ground is pavers. It's about 1.5m from the pool, and I plan to put up some lattice or wire for support.

Goodness , Arnie, that's a big ask.
You've probably described the potentially hottest and harshest part of a yard, with pretty much direct sun for lots of the day, reflection off the fence / pool water and pavers and then the retained heat off the paving.
And the notorious sometimes over 40 degree Perth summer's day.
Whatever you plant would need sizeable containers and maybe some insulation of the pots themselves inside larger pots, plus an almost guaranteed supply of water (like a timer irrigation dripper system) , or they are kind of doomed from the start.
Sorry, that's just my imagination working from your description.
On the temp. criteria, I could only think of bouganvillea surviving but they are not going to cover a fence.
I wonder if there is any way you can "cool down" that ugly fence in other ways first. Only if you own the place of course if you are renting it's back to square 1
If you own, then I was going to suggest you think about a cooling mural - maybe even get some local graffiti boys involved , to give you a tropical look. Take that hot shine off the fence and then perhaps a few tubs of palms like golden canes, or even some pots of non-invasive bamboo/ tiger grass - and then intersperse your big planters of things like ... well jasmine might go OK, or mandevilla on trellises. Pandorea are hardy, too ) there's the white as well as the native pink.

Dear amie23, we grow a hardy jasmine in the ground [just out -side Perth] that has proved to be very hardy and has green foliage and perfumed white jasmine flowers spasmodically through out the year.It's been in flower now for about 5 weeks or more.It's tough and reliable, and from the Canary islands.Many plants from there tend to be hardy here in WA.It's called jasmine azoricum, and while its not as fragrant as the pink
blushed jasmine which blooms spectacularly in spring , neither does it have that plants' wild thug tendency to run amok.If you want something more pretty, the dark green [evergreen] leaves of the chinese star jasmine can be trained on a trellis and always looks good , even out of flower. The flowers are gorgous , little twisty white fragrant things in spring.There is even a varigated version , but that's not as hardy. I believe you could put either one in a smallish pot or pots . You would probably have to feed and water small pots regularly to get the best out of them, could you put in an irrigation line to them ? You probably need an evergreen, without prickles near the pool, something kinda tough but good looking [although this is beginning to sound like a good description of the perfect partner!]
