echinopsis!

Hey all!

i have an echinopsis. not quite sure what sort, that has grown ten babies all around the outside of him. firstly, 8 of them grew on the mother leaving a gap for a couple more and have been there for about 4 months and are living quite happily. today ive found that in the gap, two new babies are forming. do you think i should leave them all there, or take them off??. id like to leave them there and just have it one big plant. do you think if i leave them on, there wont be enough room for it to grow larger?

looks like Echinopsis_calochlora ,which is a persistant one for off setting as I posted in the US cacti forum ,remove the pups and place on a well draining mix with a covering of sharp sand and you will have many to trade with ,as I do.I usually remove all the pups as they get to a decent size and pot them up for trade.

would be great to have many to trade with, but....
do you know what would happen if i were to leave them there???????? will the plant still get bigger? including the babies. its just so marvelous to have one cacti with a ring of perfect babies, i know id feel guilty if i were to seperate them. but if u think its the best option........
help, im sure u can tell i get emotional attachment to my friends (i mean plants)

Kara it seems like it’s been like this for about a month or so, maybe a bit longer! I truly think the rocks around it for stablizing may have just been pressing against it while it was growing and it caused some scarring. Maybe? Haha! It definitely has good strong roots though, l hope it pulls through!

I’ve always thought Lobivia jajoiana has nice flowers. Don’t own it, but the pics I’ve seen are beautiful. You could get a yellow flower, but still beautiful because the flowers all have this plum colored throat. pic from cactus-art Lobivia glauca pic from internet. A variety of L. jajoiana. arachnacantha is a nice little clumping cactus. I do own that one, and the flowers are an interesting color. Out of all my plants there’s no other cactus that produces flowers that color. I would definitely say it’s more yellow, but there is an orange tone to it. Easily the smallest cactus I own. I love how it turns almost black with lots of sun. Sorry pics not the best. Ok not orange or red, but I must show you one of the best flowers ever. This cactus has been on my list for awhile. Not mine, but wish it was, Lobivia famatimensis var. bonniae. Lobivia hertrichia, pic from the internet. This guy can get pretty evil looking with the spines, for me that’s a plus. I dont really know for the first one. On garden org they suggest some kind of melocactus....which does hold some merit with m.curvispinus sub species(but im not fully convinced). I dont think its a subdenudata, on account of neither the spines or shape matches. I do consider a hybrid between it and something else.... For the second one it is possible......

Hi Huntington is not selling the hybrids online anymore. I heard something catastrophic happened and the stock has to be rebuilt before they can start selling again. The plants were getting smaller, but at least they weren't charging an arm and a leg for them. I will revisit the other places suggested. And I went to Arizona Cactus Sales, they always had some Schick hybrids, but the site is trying to sell some kind of high blood pressure drug????? The Lowes by me just got in some cacti and I found a nice, plump 'Rainbow Burst' so I'm good. Thank you both for your suggestions.

they seem to go through cycles of pupping
if you remove them they will make more later
its the easiest way to get more plants

I think i read that they pup till a certain age or size and then slow before continuing to grow
anyway ive seen quite large echinopsis that are still pupping every year and still growing.

If you have spare pups id be very interested in purchasing or trading for something else as mine are mostly clones and seed set is low- id love to get more - actually even pollen swaps would be great
