Caudiciforms

I want to start a collection of caudiciforms. I realise there are many different plant species in this group. Can anyone help re spare plants (swap or otherwise), or details of a good source.

There are many species in the group, but not many available in Australia. Don't really know of any sources in NSW. I;m sure there are private growers though. Do your research, as most caudicforms aren't cheap particular the good sized ones. However they are really great fascinating plants, slow growing but very rewarding.

Hello, Mark, I'd like a cutting if they're still available. Please email me at cacatnip@yahoo.com. I also have some cuttings of Senecio orbicularis if you are interested in trading. Thanks! Here is a pic of S. orbicularis. It will also form tuberous caudex from a cutting: -curiouscomputer

Plants that go dormant usually stop being dormant when whatever made them go dormant in the first place changes. If it's temperature that triggers dormancy, they break dormancy when it warms up. If it's photoperiod, they break dormancy when days get longer. If it's drought related, they break dormancy when there's water again. I've not typically had issues with succulents breaking dormancy. If they actually are genetically programmed to die after flowering once, they're monocarps. I'm not aware of begonias being monocarpic. From what I've read, caudiciform begonias will lose their leaves and stems and go dormant as a drought response, but do not have a required dormant period, and would not go dormant outside of reacting to excessive stress. The only begonias that I'm seeing that has an 'enforced' dormant period are tuberous begonias which, to the best of my knowledge, are different from the caudiciform begonias. If you have any documents that you could link to that show that caudiciform begonias DO have a seasonal dormant period, and specifically what triggers them, that would be greatly appreciated since that would probably explain what's going on.

I also collect Pachys and Adeniums. I am also growing some Pseudobombax ellipticum from seed. They seem to be doing well. Growing from seed is very easy also. Most of my plants are still seedlings that I grew myself. I have found some in local stores during the spring/ summer months. I also like to order from Arid lands and out of Africa. I also order from Corona cactus nursery and sometimes C&D plants. They have excellent plants. You can also try miles2go, they offer some hybrids. I'm hoping to grow more caudiforms this year. Oh! I'm also growing Uncarina roeoesliana and other Uncarins's that kind of form caudex's. Mark This post was edited by Maark23 on Tue, Jan 13, 15 at 0:28

Howard, I think you need to work on your autocorrect...You grow denim and have lottos, I see. Seriously, no issues with damping off. The young Adeniums I lost were several months old. I have single pane glass, and with several nights below zero this winter, they just got hit with cold. I do know about damping off and vegetable seedings from past experience, but never a problem with it and Adenium or succulent seedlings. Thanks. Christopher

Rudolf doesn't have everything! His list needs major updating, I went up there a couple of weeks ago. His retiring soon so after that, I doubt there would be anyone in Australia that would be growing much of what was formerly on his list. Better get in quick.

Thank you one and all for your comments from which I gather none of you have spare plants to trade or otherwise.
Rudolf will be in Sydney this weekend and I will see what he brings. There is a cactus and succulent show next to the Top Ryde shopping centre on Saturday.
I am not a member of any of these clubs and grow the plants for my own interest.

hello crazy orchids ,

I am trying to liven up this forum, and I was wondering if you could post a new message detailing your success or otherwise in your persuit of caudici forms. Did you obtain anything from Rudy . If so how about a picture
