Why do you want to grow indigo Jamus? Could it be for tie-dye?

Anakei, on what page of the King's Catalogue is Indigo? I can't find it.

I'm interested in dye plants and ethnobotany in general. I'm a bit of an experimenter and feel like unless I've tried something myself I can't claim to know anything about it. You get a certain thrill out of recreating an age old process that was so important in days gone by but is now long lost, replaced by nasty carcinogenic compounds from the omnipresent petrochemical industry. As a kid I made copper from copper ore, made proper silver mirrors, electroplated things, and gunpowder and tested the levels of lead in peoples rain water etc etc. So you can see, it's a pathology!

Sorry, my mistake. I've just looked again and can't find it. I was so sure they had indigo. Perhaps it was in a previous catalogue. If I find it any where else I'll let you know.
I did find woad. Paint your self blue and go naked!

Woad would be interesting! I think out of respect for the neighbours I'll pass on the naked bit :) I'm growing madder at the moment, which is doing well. Apparently you're supposed to wait 3 years for the roots to reach full maturity before harvesting! That's a long time...

Anakei, that is most annoying, isn't it? Sometime ago I bought some Brugmansia Blackcurrant Swirl seeds from Kings, but I see in their latest catalogue that they are "Not Australia" now.

I think Kings is the most comprehensive catalogue I have, so I feel very let down when they don't have some thing

Just remembered....Richters catalogue. They have an agent in WA, Eschol Springs Nursery....send an email to eschol@iinet.net.au for a catalogue. If you look at Richters website, they have Indigo listed. May not be available in Australia, as some of the seeds aren't, but it's worth a try.

Anna, have you ordered plants from Richters online? If so, how did you find the service?

I was only growing false indigo but got rid of it. Also good for dye. I could have send it to someone, if I would have seen this forum earlier.
It's a pitty that Brugmansia is a weed here in australia, wouldn't mind to enlarge my brug collection. AQIS has its hand over the most nice plants, but if you look in older gardens, especially into grandmothers, there are heaps of the nice plants.
Richters is a nice nursery and very realiable, as long as my experience goes, but I have ordered only from the french shop so far.

Hi Jamus, sorry can't help you with the true indigo, but I was wondering if you know if the native plant Indigofera Australis is so-named because it is used to obtain the indigo pigment? I'm kinda curious about it.

Hi Mudlark, I was vaguely aware that we had an indigenous Indigofera. Maybe I can ask about it at the state flora nursery? I'd be interested to see it. It might be growing at the botanic gardens also near the bicentenial conservatory?

I'm more interested in tinctoria for it's historical significance. I'm in no rush though. I've got lots of plants I'd like to grow at some point but either haven't found them or the time to collect them. I'm sure you can sympathise!
