Honey Leaf-Where Can I get one Plant

Hi,

I am very much interseted in this plant,never heard before.Recently I read in a local newpaper (from India) that some reserch is going on on this plant ,to make medicine to cure Diabetis as there is no glucose content in the leaves of this plant & Diabetic patients can substitute this with sugar.They got some patent to extract sugar in an easy way using some water technique.Can some body tell me where can I buy this plant In QLD,Australia. We live at the Gold Coast.

I think you are referring to Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), also called Sweet Herb of Paraguay, which can be used to sweeten foods and drinks. It is not, however, a substitute for sugar when making confectionery - it does not dissolve, or turn into a syrup like sugar.

It is readily available at many plant nurseries, but especially herb nurseries. Any nursery should be able to order a plant in for you. You might even find it at a plant stall at your local weekend markets. Take a trip to Mt Tambourine one weekend to the markets there! Or another down to the North Coast of NSW - Byron Bay, Nimbin and neighbouring towns are places certain to have it in abundance.

I'm in Brisbane, and it grows very well here. It usually dies back in winter, especially if allowed to flower, but always pops back in spring - quite early.

Hi Mike, Dont buy the oxypetalum. I am sending you a few pieces of this one. It is true that they grow like crazy. I left this one at my parents house when I moved out because it does take a tremendous amount of space. I got a call from my mom and she told me that she was waiting for the day that that was going to strangle her..LOL. Once you have an established cutting, you can expect some new growths to be a couple feet long. No joke, mine had some growths that were 4 ft long in one summer!! The blooms are great! Just make sure your going to be home to enjoy them! Mine only lasted one night and that was it. As soon as the sun went down, the bud would begin to open. By the time the sun came up, it was closing. Logees describes it as having flowers the size of dinner plates. I had some that were even larger than that!!! Mine is pitifull now compared to when it was in its glory. I wished I would have found a way to care for it here. At one point, that plant was around 10ft long but I have had it for over 10 years. You can control the growth with pruning. Just make sure you do it at the right time or you will end up with no blooms. I will have to read up on my notes on this before I can tell you when to prune it. I can send you 3-4 nice cuttings next week with the others if you want okay? I also have a nice big pink epi. I don't know the name of the variety but it is really pretty. Trust me, neither of them will take a lifetime to get blooms from. My oxy bloomed in 1.5-2 years after I got it. I started a couple for friends and the one I gave to my landlords mom bloomed the same year I rooted it! The pink variety I bought locally and they had rooted cuttings with buds on them. Just curious thanks GG, especially in the context of being too cold to ship plants to where you are or not. Serious cold kicked in to NYC today, 30s, w/ windchill in 20s. I've been sick so stayed in today playing w/ plants, cleaning up lots of pots, quilting, & then OOPS!! My Bldg's alternate energy sources (generators) pooped out at 7:30 pm. Too early to sleep so I came all the way outside to find Internet to play. No more Hoyas for me 'til Spring I think -- Happy Holidays everybody!!

Gravel creates a perched water table. There is a lot of information about it on the soil forum. When water moves through soil it tends to cling a bit to particles right above larger particles, so the soil right above the gravel will be wet. It's better to have the same material all the way through your pot. Your tomatoes still look pretty good. Keeping the watering even is just as important in preventing blossom end rot as calcium. When the soil goes from wet to dry back and forth, the roots don't take up the calcium even if it is there.
