stenocereus thurberi ( organpipe cactus)?

I'm just wondering whether anyone has ever seen Stenocereus thurberi growing or for sale in Australia?

I'd love to grow one.

Have you tried Hynes? They are usually good with names too. If they don't have the full name at least they have the family.

Hi Moksha, I have a cactus which is named as Stenocactus thurberi. I'm not sure if it is the same as your wanting. It's been growing in a pot since maybe the mid 80's I think. It has no offsets, and has never flowered. And is about 10 inches high. Very very slow grower. I think I must have picked it up from a nursey when very small, but can't remember where.
I'll post a photo in the Oz Garden Gallery in the next few days. Probably about Tuesday as I don't think I'm going to have time between now and then.. But you never know.. I may get to it sooner.. Good luck with finding one... Pauline

That is a great example of microclimates JoJo! The time spent at the minimum temperature (minutes, hours, days) plays a big role in what temperatures a plant can survive. So does the amount of water in the plant, and in the soil. Dry plants are much more tolerant of cold compared to wet plants. Plants in the ground can survive colder temperatures than plants in pots. I have found most of my plants can tolerate much lower temperatures than typically listed. These lows are brief, just a few hours at most, and it's at least 20 degrees warmer during the day. So plants that are supposed to not go below the mid-thirties F can tolerate minimum temperatures in the high twenties. Agave ferdinand-regis is listed at both +5, and -12 in the list above. The difference between a minimum average temperature, absolute minimum temperature, and Fahrenheit and Celsius scales is often confused. Minimum temperature listings should be regarded with great suspicion, even when coming from a more or less credible source like Desert-Tropicals. It is better to research the plants natural environmental conditions. I would not give much credence to this, or any other so called 'minimum temperature' list. Thanks guys. Looks like they are identified. The oreocereus looks really bad it has orange-like scale or something one it. Its as if the cactus is peeling. Could it be because it was in a 8in pot with a big ferocactus. The oreocereus is about 3ft tall and the ferocactus is about 18in tall and atleast that size around. I tried to get a picture but it is very hard to see. Thanks again

Hi Toni I have no problem planting seeds in January, which is the earliest I sow seeds that way when they sprout they grow when the days are getting longer, not shorter, as they are now. They should be okay for now, since I wouldn't ordinarily plant seeds after Oct 15 or so. They were planted about 2 weeks ago. I used Miracle Grow Seed Starter for the soil. They should get plenty of sun (as much as they can get in a So. window. My sprouts at home have an Eastern window and once the leaves fall off the trees they'll get more light than they do now. I have Cardons, a Pachy Rosalatum and seveal other cacti seedlings from around a year ago. And a very weak looking A. Obesum. Hopefully after leaf drop outside the Obesum will enjoy the extra sun. My friend wants to sell cacti seedlings in little pots. He gets lots of children who might be interested. I, however, can't part with any. I want one of the Joshua Trees. Sage

My seedlings (Stenocereus Thurberi and Ferocactus Wislenzi) sprouted in September and are still under humid plastic in a Southern exposure and they look great. Sagebrush

Thanks for the reply Pauline,

It's highly unlikely that yours is a S.thurberi. This is large, clustering cactus hence it's name - organpipe cactus. Stenocereus are generally big cacti.

Feel free to still post the photo though.
Maybe we can work out what it really is! ; )

I've posted the picture in the gallery with a message. I had trouble getting it to load and now it's just a small piccy.. I'll have to play around a bit more and figure out how things are done....(when I have time) I have a lot of cactus and would love to show you all some of them...

I AM INTERESTED IN CEREUS GENERALLY . I HAVE NOT COME ACCROSS THIS HOWEVER . I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A PICTURE OF IT

I bought mine a few years at Gardenworld(VIC). I have had it growing in a large rectangular foam box with other columnar cacti for the past 3 years. I purchase it as a 5cm seedling and it probably has doubled in height in all that time, so a very slow grower. Although it might grow a bit faster if I could keep it warmer year-round. I live in Melbourne!

My two cents worth. I have a Stenocereus thurberi that I bought ten years ago that was about five inches tall when I bought it. It survived indoors with little water or sun for about seven years and then I got the idea to set it outside on a hot balcony for the Summer. It got a rather significant amount of rain and what do you know, it grew. Not much but it is now maybe ten inches tall. It only grows about an inch every Summer on my balcony in full sun. It is going to get a six inch pot early 2006 and it'll be back out next Summer. Altman Plants or Cactus collection.com. I also saw some on Stickysituation.com -CJ
