Parsley problems

Is anyone else having problems with parsley this year? All my parsley has bolted. On the other hand the sage and the tarragon which struggled all through last year are going gangbusters....

Hi Mallow, looks like no-one is having problems. My parsley comes and goes fairly rapidly, with use and bolting, but it self seeds and new ones come on all the time. A few plants at various stages means I don't miss one when it goes to pot.

I find mine tends to be a bit bi-ennieal??
one year it grows fantastic (I let it self seed) and the next year it does the same as yours. i have a good year this time. Last year I pulled up the plant roots and all and sprinkled it around the garden beds this way I got several plants come up. Sure enough some are lovely and healthy and others have gone straight to head.

Parsley does very well for me here in the subtropics, even in the full blast of the afternoon sun. But I wouldn't be tempted to put it near the hot glass of a window. Plants' leaves can burn very easily that way. It's possible that the white spots were the first signs of scorching. However, because most problems with inside plants are due to fungal infections or insects, one of those is the most likely cause. Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) has its uses in the garden, but can be damaging if overdosed. It will help to raise the alkalinity of soil which is a bit on the acid side (good for tomatoes in such cases); it can act as an antifungal when mixed in the proportions of 3 teaspoons baking soda to 4 litres (1 gallon) of water (NOT vinegar!! and best applied as a preventative, less effective as a treatment. It can burn the leaves of susceptible plants, so test on a small area first. Also, don't use the mixture to water your plants - the soda can interfere with the absorption of water by the roots.); you can use baking soda to test the pH of your soil (add a pinch of baking soda to 1 tablespoon of soil. If it fizzes, the soil's pH level is probably less than 5.0). The first thing to try is chamomile tea. Just spray it on - it's a specific for fungal infections on plants. If that isn't effective, opt for a garlic spray - that also is an excellent antifungal treatment, but it will also deter a lot of insects. AND it's safe for plants and humans. Your parsley won't taste of garlic once you've given it a rinse in water. Last but not least - no plant was designed to grow in a house. It is anything but an ideal place for them, and they'll all benefit from a little time in the great outdoors, where they'll get the REAL unfiltered rays from the sun, and where predator bugs can deal with infestations.

There's also a new type of MG soil with water retention crystals. Don't know how much longer it holds water, but IF original rootball was really small but really wet and IF you put it much larger pot and IF you watered it a whole lot -- is it possible it just got waterlogged that's what killed it? I have all those "IF's" since I don't know what conditions were. Just a thought....

>You can get fresh parsley at Publix I can also get it (for half the price) at my produce market, but I love having fresh parsley there whenever I need it which is why I have grown it year round for many years. What's troubling is that this is the time of year it usually grows best, with no summer heat to thwart it. >Have you looked @ the water/fertilizer you're using? When we moved here I repotted into a large decorative clay pot I got on sale at Publix. Today we drilled more holes in its bottom in case the water is not draining properly. I haven't been fertilizing much (because I thought perhaps I had been over fertilizing) but have begun to do so with more regularity. >is this parsley you started from seed? Or were these purchased transplants? Always plants, not from seed, but in this case I got plants from three different sources, and they all went wonky on me. I've removed all the yellowed leaves leaving only healthy foliage, so we'll see if the latest attempts are going to make a difference.

I'm so glad you bumped this, Rick, because it's actually gotten worse since the initial post. Still hasn't spread to the other plants, though. So I don't know if it's a nutrient problem. The soil was really good to begin with, and I've fertilised once since the start of spring here (when Woko suggested it three weeks ago). Maybe salt spray or pH, but it's worsening without its neighbours being affected. Can pH be that localised? Or each plant copes differently? I've actually never done a test before, so I think I will pick up a kit just to see. I found that PDF you directed me to, Rick. I had seen that, but you mentioned viruses, which I hadn't considered, so I took another look. That could be it. So obscure, but would explain why it's not spreading as I haven't seen any aphids on them since the seedling stage. To be honest I'm probably just going to dig it out and toss it --there are plenty of healthy plants waiting to take its place. But I'd still be interested to know whether anybody's seen something similar.

You can tell i'm new to parsley! Actually I haven't had a garden for more than ten years so it's all a bit of an experiment but a lot of fun - I just love to garden. I'll take a look for self seeded plants under the poppies and the delphiniums and see whether I can encourage them to grow...

My italian parsely bolted as soon as it could grow mature leaves, about 3 months after I grew it from seed! Have no idea why...i gave it lots of nitrogen and transplanted it??? maybe it affected it?

I haven't had trouble with parsley. But it is a biennial so will die in its second year. It will bolt to seed if transplanted. Seeds should be sown in situ for best results. It will also bolt to seed if you overfeed it - it sort of makes it age faster. And it doesn't like a lot of heat, so since i'm in a hot area, I keep mine shaded most of the day. Inconsistent watering may hasten the seed stems to form. Don't let it dry out between waterings.

I have plenty of dwarf triple curly parsleys and I welcome parsleys cuz black swallowtails lay eggs on them and those caterpillars eat them to become butterflies after cocoons. More colorful butterflies, the better in my yard.
I move any to a container with other herb plants or other flowerbeds.

My parsley never grows where I pop the seeds. I have a single standerd iceberg rose, and each year without fail there the parsley grows! The rose and the parsley must like each other!
