Astrophytum

Hi all

I'm going to start to grow some Astrophytum's and am wondering if anyone on this forum grows any.

If so do you grow them from seed or buy plants? Where do you get them from?

I already have 2 a A. ornatum and another I think might be a form of A. ornatum.

I've also sown my first lot of A. asterias seeds (purchased on ebay) last week and have 6 little seedlings.

I have one Astrophytum myriostigma that I bought at a cactus show here in Brisbane. I also have an Astrophytum ornatum that I bought cheap from Big W.

I collect various Astrophytum. All most all are started from seeds.
I have introduced some of my collections in my site.
Please have a look my internet site.

Here's my A. myriostigma Fukuryu... This type has a lot more bumps and wrinkles than yours. They can have white flecks, or not have any. and here's my other myriostigma that's more like yours. Actually mine is a quadricostatum, because it has 4 ribs, not the usual 5.

What happened with my Astrophytum please ?

This is if you rinse the roots off. If the roots are dry and the mix is dry, I would spray it lightly with water and then wait about 2-3 weeks to water again. The length of time depends on how hot it is and how quickly things dry out. After that I'd start watering regularly. I let mine dry out and then water them thoroughly, not just a sip :-) Once they start plumping back up, I'd slow acclimate them to more sun. Might take a while.

Accelerated corking on astrophytum?

I would almost consider that normal corking. I have a plant, a gymnocalycium that is corked 3/4 the way up the stem.
