We think that oleander aphids originated in the Mediterranean region and traveled to this country with their host plant - oleander. They are common in the warm southern and western states where oleander thrives, but in cooler latitudes oleander aphids make their home on several types of milkweeds in fields and gardens. The ability to give live birth and the elimination of males allows a few oleander aphids to generate a bazillion daughters and granddaughters in just a few weeks. Like their relatives the rose aphid, they are attacked and killed by a host of predators and parasites I have sprayed using my rose spray for aphids. I am hoping this will work!

James - any herbs you buy in Waitrose, or any other supermarket, are intended for short lives as growing cookery ingredients, rather than as long term pot plants. They are a grocery store, not a garden centre and as such sell to eat, not to grow. Their herbs are forced along in warm, light greenhouses specifically to look good in the veg section. They even skew the lighting in that section to emphasise the greenness of the produce. Your chives actually look very good for plants from a supermarket and there are no grounds for complaint to Waitrose. They do need repotting if you want them to last as growing plants. If they don't survive I'd buy a new potful from a garden centre. BTW Basil from the supermarket veg section is going to be a clump of seedlings, not an individual plant. Splitting the clump will not hurt it as long as each section has roots. Basil is also incredibly easy to grow from seed so you could sow some right now indoors. Watering from the bottom is a cinch. Get something deeper than a saucer for each plant. e.g yoghurt/marge/corttage cheese tub. Put the plant pot into it and fill the tub with water. Leave about 15 minutes. Pour out any excess water from the tub. Then leave your plants in peace.

I have three magnolia trees side by side. They are young. They're about 6-7 feet tall. I had them in large planters and moved them into the soil in the fall. They are not doing well. Here are the things I've noticed: -They used to have that rust/brown colored fuzz on the bottoms of the leaves. Now most of the leaves don't have any of that fuzz at all. -Some of the leaves are yellow, and many of them have small dark brown spots (see photos) -Many of the leaves are drooping (angled toward the ground) -Many of the leaves have been eaten by pests (see photos) -I think there are several pests as I have seen several types of bugs on the plant. -One of the pests eats the leaves and causes them to curl/distort, and then under the curled portion on the underside of the leaf, you will find small cotton-like deposits -I have seen both tiny white flies, tiny brown flies with white wings, tiny dark grey/black bugs without wings, tiny clear bugs Please help me save my magnolias. What kinds of pests am I dealing with (I think the small white fly was just that...white fly...but what about the others. What pest eats and curls the leaves and then makes white gauze-like cocoons on the underside?
