Best climbing roses to plant

I want to plant an orange and a yellow climbing rose. As my garden is not very big I am looking for rosed which are repeat flowering. I do like the older varieties but ant to have roses which have a long flowering season. Also like them to be sturdy growers, my Dublin Bay is a beaty, fulfilling all my requitements. Have also planted Schoolgirt but she looks to be a little less strong growing but I saw it in a grden centre 8 years ago and have hankered after it ever since and when I saw it for sale a couple o fmonths ago I had to bring it homw.

Have you seen Westerland? Kind of orangey/apricot colour. Mum has it growing around her garage door. Flowers don't last for too long though, but makes up for that by being smothered in buds.

For the yellow I'd go for the Austin/English rose - Graham Thomas. I've found it to perform well under droughty conditions and neglect. It does tend to powdery mildew if it is needing water, however. If its branches are bent down it breaks well along the branch, giving heaps of flowers over a long time. I don't recall it balling under wet. It has a good scent according to my nose. Pruning group 1 are all species clematis and purple is not really a color option with these. You can get some nice bluey/lavenders with the alpinas or macropetalas however. I would recommend a pruning group 3 vine. These prefer to be hard pruned annually, which I find easiest to deal with when growing through or on other plants. 'Jackmanii', 'Gypsy Queen' or 'Etoile Violette' are all great purple flowered varieties. Try and avoid watering on any foliage. It promotes all manner of diseases, especially with roses. You may have manually adjust your sprinkler head to accomplish this.

groupgirl, that was a great site, thanks. KP, if you don't want to spray, I do recommend that you try a product called Bayer-All-in-one rose care. It's a semi-liquid (sort of pudding consistency) mixture that you would mix in water and pour around the rose bush every 6 weeks or so. It is a fertilizer, and systematic insect and disease protector. It will give your roses more resistance to black spot and it has virtually eliminated aphids on my roses. I still spray, but have stretched that out to about every 3-4 weeks due to the Bayer all in one. It all depends on your tolerance for black spot. If you don't mind a bit of it, then you should be OK.

Best climbing/rambling rose for part shade?

I know Zephirine Drouhin has a reputation for doing well in shade. I have one. Not sure if it's a long bloom time - mine is still young, and they take about 3 years to get established, which may be longer than you want to wait. They're also thornless and fragrant. :)

What yellow climbing roses do you like best?

Mindy, by far my most hardy and steady blooming yellow climber is Lunar Mist. It is related to Colette, and it has lovely fully double blooms all along its length if you train it sideways. Mine is usually cane hardy for at least half of the cane, but this year I had moisture issues and had to train it back further. It's a lighter yellow than the lovely photos oldrosarian showed, but it doesn't quite fade to that mucky cream color that some yellows can get. It stays at least lemon sherbet colored. Autumn Sunset is indeed very hardy for me though mine isn't in a great spot and doesn't bloom much. It survives even in my zone 4 pocket. I tried Goldstern there but it apparently isn't hardy to zone 4 - I'll have to try it again in a warmer spot. Sun Flare wasn't hardy in a normal zone 5 spot, so zone 6 might be its limit. I have Landora on my next year wish list from Hortico, and it's moved to the top of the list after oldrosarian's lovely photo. Teasing Georgia sort of climbs in our zones, but I find it does better as a large freestanding bush. It wouldn't put out long laterals to cover an arch, but it could drape sideways along a fence if needed. It's somewhat cane hardy but being an Austin it loses a lot of canes to canker most years as well. It's also a lemon yellow with some hints of apricot in cooler weather. Thanks so much for your recommendations. Got onto the web and viewed the blooms and they look wonderful. Will search around and order them for later on in the year. Have also had a friend tell me I must have Westerland. Graham Thomas was a new rose for me but along with Westerland they will look very well along the boundary fence. Took a shopping trip to the garden centre a few days ago and had a wonderful buying spree. Came home with a Michelia 'Mixed up Miss, an Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' (have to stop myself adding a 'y' after the blood!), 2 crepe myrtle bushes, 2 Philodendrons and a Pittidpotum 'White Cloud". Went again to day and picked up a Viburnum "Davidii". It will be so enjoyable waithing for them to grow. Bonza
