best nursery for herbs?

I am looking to buy herbs for my little balcony pots in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Does anyone have any recommendations of the best place to go? I don't have specific needs, but would like to find things that are more interesting than the usual parsley-sage-rosemary-thyme. Brooklyn or Manhattan is best. Also it would be great if they deliver (after I go there and pick them out, I know some places will do this), as I do not have a car.

Also, is now the best time to do my planting?

think it will be tough to find herbs, other than the run of the mill you mentioned, in brooklyn/manhattan, and if you do find, the chance of them delivering is virtually zero.

there is a decent garden market called the terminal on foster avenue in brooklyn- and between the various vendors, you many find one or two outside the run of the mill selection but not many, and you will probably have to wait till the middle of may for them to be in stock.

different plants are best planted at different times, but generally speaking, early spring and and early fall are good planting times.

if you buy herbs in the seed form, you can go online and buy an almost endless variety of herbs for only a couple of dollars each. this works best if you have a little space and grow light to start them off indoors.

Thanks, Lycheeluva. I see that online sources also offer live plants. Good idea or bad idea?

Can I start from seed now, for this season? I can't do them indoors but I have a west-facing balcony that gets a lot of light. Is it too cold?

Most all the plants in your list and all the ones *'d are native plants. Nurseries specializing in native plants and seeds will also have these for sale. Many native plants can be quite challenging to start from seed. Winter sowing is one of the best ways to try, but even then it can be difficult or take multiple years. I would suggest trying to start seed but also plan on buying young plants as well. It will provide a less frustrating experience for you. I've grown or are growing many of the plants you list. While some like the sun, many are woodland plants. You will want to check the growing conditions before planting all of them in the same garden. For example, butterflyweed (A. tuberosa) likes the soil lean and dry plus a lot of sun. While blue cohosh on the other hand will fry in the sun and likes the rich and moist woodland conditions. I would suggest planning a sun garden and a shade/woodland garden if you intend to grow all of these. You may also wish to look for herbal references of the practitioners of America's Eclectic and Thomsonian medicine traditions which may be of similar time period to Kline, who I am unfamiliar with. Welcome South from a fellow ex-Nutmegger. Best can be said for the big box nurseries is they have great sales on plants they've abused. You'll find that you will have a selection that extends clear to Zone 10 in spring. Things you can probably grow rather easily in the warm months but need extra care in fall and winter. Last year I bought a Kaleidoscope Abelia and it really does get multi colored in fall. What we need to know to give plant advice is how much sun the planting area gets and at what time of the day, moisture level, drainage, soil composition etc. I like also to know prevailing winds and what is the backdrop for these plantings. A brick backdrop in full sun can really bake some shrubs. So paint us a picture with words about your home and yard.

Every market is different - there is no way to predict what will sell well for you. My market changes every weekend, what sells well one Saturday won't move at all the next. Rather than try to guess what will work I just grow a lot of anything I can. I think that by having a mix you attract all the different kinds of customers. If my booth only offered rare or medicinal herbs I wouldn't make enough money to stay in business - but by having a few each weekend it trains the customers that I am a source for those specialty items should they ever go looking for them. In my experience, you have to set up and sell plants for a long long time before your business is stable. There is no instant success (at least for me!). It takes time for customers to learn who you are, what you sell, how often you're there, how good your products are.... so you have to just do it even if you loose money at first. Don't give up. Don't undersell just to move product (no one should aim to be the cheapest vendor at the market!!!). Do the best you can and offer the best product you can grow. In time you will build up a customer base that you can make money off of and by then you will know what you want out of this business.

buying plants online is fine. i buy 90% of my stuff online. you should be ok weatherwise if you plant them now. i would guess, they wont grow that much for a month or so till the weather heats up.

Dunno if what is offered at the Union Sq Greenmarket is too "run of the mill" for you... But you can always try! When I pass by, it does seem they have many many herbs...

I believe they should have them by now, or at least some. Last year I got english thyme, orange mint, rosemary, baby chives and larger chives.

I buy at Union Square. They have some good stuff. Anyone interested in doing a trade?

Unfortunately my english thyme didn't make it through the winter on the roof. I might have things to trade later in the summer when my plants start growing. We'll see. I focus on edibles and have limited space.

Oooh, Shiso is one of the things I'm looking for. I have nothing at all to trade, though. The only thing that came back from last year is chives. I will def. check out Union Sq.

Well, if you are interested in a day trip, take Metro North's New Haven line to Westport CT and have a cab take you to Gilberties. They are a huge grower of every type of herb its an amazing place.
