Sulphate of Potash

HELP - I wish to use Sulphate of Potash for bulbs, shrubs,fruit gtrees and annuals. Is there a recommended quantity i.e. xxxx grams per sq.meter.and/or per "plant"? Most references just say "a dressing"!? Can I use too much?

Am dissapointed with this site - have found it is not really user - i.e. to get to "conversations" which does no always appear on the screen and find it difficult to get to this section of the site. Given that I posted a question over eight weeks ago and NOT ONE RESPONSE maybe other users have the same problems!!! I don't for one moment think that there is not a gardener out there who does not know the answer to my problem. Gardeners are friendly sharing folks who share there tips, widsom, experience and plants sooooo maybe the site is not really user friendly. I was really excited when I found this site but now I don't know. I'll keep checking. I live in hope! Happy New Year to the "gardeners from down-under"

P.S. Perhaps the web site managment may like to comment to me directley?

hi zeezee, I think it's better to post the question over at the gardening in oz forum, it doesnt seem like anyone visits this chat area but there are people lurking around the other forums. I'm sure I have this information somewhere, so I'll check my bag of potash and my books and report back if you like

I'm a viniculturist, but I have thoughts on soil management. A soil with high pH 'locks in' iron and potassium, so using ammonium sulphate in solution for short time or sulphur for permanentcy will increase the acid level. For any magnesium deficiency use a tablespoon of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts. g.). For tomatoes I use 5-10-10 at planting then osmocoat when the fruit are as big as golf balls plus an ounce of Amm. Sulphate. (My soil is 7.4 pH.). As for umbrellers, gentlemen farmers work for prizes at the County Fair, as opposed to commercial growers. (grin again)

Thank you very much to all the responders to my questions :-))) My question really revolved around *making the roses resist diseases and pests* rather than actual treatments. That's my understanding of the philosophy behind "organic" gardening. I'm aware that everything is a chemical and it's not a term I use in the context that some people use "chemical" and "non-chemical" - as though something could be a "non-chemical"! It wouldn't be anything at all! Regardless, it was an interesting exercise and I am grateful to the folk who answered - I was not able to answer personally as no email addresses are available. I'm still at the beginning of my quest for some cultural changes I could make to help the roses *resist* disease and pests. I have squashed regiments of aphids and have heard of the milk spray - regardless of the benign nature of these treatments, they are still *treatments* and not ways to make the roses intrinsically healthier which is what I still want to do. I should live so long! This form of communication is complex so I'll sign off from this forum. In the meantime ... Happy gardening and thank you again for your responses :-))) Elaine

Hi clareanon just on the the rose Best Friend--I bought this rose last year covered in beautiful fragrant blooms. I then transfered it to a very large container and while it grew well the blooms didnt appear again. I bought it towards the end of the season. Does yours have many blooms thru the season or is it a rose that flowers once or twice and thats it? Thanks Michelle

If you cut the ends of the rhizomes off they will most likely rot right through, once the inside is exposed to damp. Lime is the best thing to put on the open ends, and you can use this at this time of year, but it will inhibit the uptake of fertiliser, so you do so at the expense of bloom. When I lime my irises in winter it looks like a snowstorm - i am very heavy handed, but I have quite acid soil here, and quite wet heavy clay loam. By adding sand and gypsum and building my beds up considerably higher than they were, i think I may have escaped rot this year. I should mention that my iris beds are built on a flat area over the top of the septic drainage beds, so i have a particularly difficult situation. You don't say whether your soil is sandy or heavy? Do you have some idea of the acidity? You can use dolomite instead of garden lime, and it does not change the pH as much. I don't use any formulas, just a general idea - for a bed 2 railway sleepers (9ft) long and 1 sleeper wide, I added a small trailer load of sand and 1/2 of manure. Gypsum had to be put on quite heavy - probably 1/4 cm thick all over. Then I rotary hoed it all in, and mounded the soil in rows - 6 rows across each bed roughly 60cm wide, with a depression between of course. Each raised row is planted with a double row of bearded iris - I fit around 80 clumps to each large bed. To cut back on weeding I filled the depression with pea straw, which does unfortunately harbour fungal spores and contribute to leaf spotting, but it is easier to strip off than bark chips, when I re-make the bed. I also rotate my iris beds with vegetable beds. I find this is helping considerably. 2 years with irises, 1 with vegies. Doesn't work with everyone of course, because of the space needed. I am working more towards growing my irises in with other plants, but with over 500 varieties, that is not an easy option for me.

hi zeezee, according to my yates gardening guide it's 10 grams per square metre. I use more than on my fruit trees (I usually give them a handful sprinkled over the root zone)

G'day Redcryptonite, Many thanks for your comments and advice. I had given up of getting a response and so used lots of handfulls!! It seems to have worked as I have an array of bulbs in flower and still have pansies in full flower which is not the norm. I also have a cyclamen planted outside that is also in flower. Just shows the cool summer we have had and how it alters Mother Natures normal pattern. Now I just need to go and weigh my handfulls! thanks zeezee

no worries zeezee, for most plants and bulbs a small pinch is all theyll need but if youre growing fruit trees they are heavy feeders so they like more to set and develop fruit. the extra potash could affect the plants ability to take up other nutrients and it might make them thirsty too but then again, they might be just fine

i haven't been here myself for ages as the forum seemed to be inactive.

can't help much with your question as i don't add any man made applications into my gardening.

a scientific friend once told me that the sulphate part of things turned into sulphuiric acid once water was added, he also said that the active ingredient ie.,. potash was not going to be much more than about 10% or so of the total mix.

we've always gotten good fruit from just mulching with green mulches like spoilt lucerene & pasture grass hay, currently using sugar cane mulch.

the gardening in oz section still draws some activity.

The recommendations on the packet of Sulphate of Potash I bought at Bunnings are:

Apply in dry form at rate of 10g per sq.metre and water in well or dissolve 20g in 8 litres of water and apply over 2sq.metres.

Yet, remembering how lavishly Peter Cundall applied it to his patch down in Hobart (I don't watch the show any longer), I don't think it matters too much...
