Carrot fly and other nasties

I haven't grown carrots here for about three years, due to increasingly heavy infestations of carrot fly and another nasty which also invades the spuds. I was losing about 75% of the crop, which made growing them a total waste of time and effort. I always use crop rotation, but nothing I did seemed to work. However, this season, I read about using grass clippings between the carrot rows. This apparently keeps the nasty ones away, so I'm giving it a go. Has anyone had any experience with this, or any other organic method? I would appreciate any comments or feed-back.
