Parsley going to seed

I was just wondering when parsley goes to seed will it actually grow form the seeds? What, if anything, do you have to do to it?

In the past I have ripped them out and just bought new punnets, which I seem to be doing a lot! And going without lovely fresh parsley.

Yes, parsley does self-seed, and can do so prolifically. I've got parsley growing in the cracks of my paved pathways, from seeds blown several metres, even around corners! It can take quite a while for the seeds to ripen and fall, and another quite a while for new plants to start, but it does happen. And when it does, you've got more parsley than you know what to do with!!

Just don't forget (as Daisyduckworth has helped me with) that they grow best if left to grow where they have come up. They really prefer not to be moved.

Heat, lack of water, lack of humidity...all are common indoor problems. Zone 5 still has alot of cold weather yet to go. You can't move the indoor plant outside yet. No matter how hardy parsley is (and it is hardy), you can't take a pampered indoor plant used to household temperatures and move it to freezing outdoor temperatures. Wait until the weather gets more mild and you start planting other plants outside before trying to harden off your indoor plant. Planting parsley directly outside is best. I let a whole row of parsley go to seed last year. The profusion of blossoms followed by copious amounts of seeds mean that they are tiny parsley plants all over in that area of the garden. I can see them green and waiting under some of the debris and remains of their parent plants. As you can see, they over winter fine outdoors all by themselves. :) FataMorgana

Parsley will go to seed early if it has been subjected to late transplanting, or a sudden change in temperature, or other 'abuse'. Also (something to watch for) some unscrupulous nurseries will sell you small seedlings that are actually more than a year old and treated with anti-growth hormones. So when you plant them, and you think you've got a true baby, actually you've got a year-old plant instead! Yes, your parsley is going to seed, which is a pity because the plant is very small for an adult. Let it go to seed and you could find parsley plants all over the place next year.

Last summer's parsley in my garden is bolting now too. It's not the heat for me, it's just that time for the parsley. I direct sow parsley in my garden every year, about the time I think it must have been dud seed, there is it sprouting. I think the key to direct sowing parsley is to forget that it takes so long to germinate and plan to put something else in the spot and low-and-behold, there it is! ;) FataMorgana

In your zone, right now you can directly sow them in the garden. But parsleys like cooler weather. I consider them cool crop. I started mine in cold fram in February. I am in zone 7/8 GA. I have had one harvest so far. I chpped and freezed them. I am practical about herbs. I plant them for consumption not just for show. I have a parsley-like herb called "chervil". I found the seeds by accident in a dollar store. It is a french favorite in place of parsley. It has tiny fern-like leaves and grows fast and taller than parsley. If you like parsley you should also plant some chervil.

Thanks Deejaus for the reminder! Yes, I leave them just where they are. As with most plants which have a long tap root, parsley doesn't like being transplanted. I get rather a buzz out of useful plants growing in my pavers, actually! It's, like, Nature at its best - defying the odds. When they get too big to walk around, I just hoik them out. I get lettuce growing in amazing places, too.
