thanx Sharon! No I don't go for the whole taking a drive in the country with your spade thing... I've wanted an Alberta Wild Rose bush for years, and it's taken me 2 years of trying to germinate seeds but I've got 5 seedlings planted out already and 3 more in containers! I'm checking out those 2 websites, and I'll run upstairs and grab my credit card to order!!!

I have a question about growing these. I would love to get some, but am wondering if my site would work. I have clay soil, which is about 7 on the ph scale. I have an area that goes from full sun to part shade to full shade, I can plant anywhere within this area. The types of trees that are growing there now are some cedar, Ash,Oak and popplar. I consider the full sun part as dry, the shade is more dry shade, than wet shade. What do you guys think?

You could try the sources listed in this thread: http://www.slippertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1007 Some of the links are dead, probably because they are for companies offering "rescues", which is a nice way of saying they bought land and dug up the orchids to sell. Others are reputable companies that offer Cypripediums grown from seed. You may have to wait awhile but laboratory propagated orchids will have the best chance of survival and do not impact wild populations. I've been considering trying to grow this species in vitro. Will probably fail but might be fun to try.

Ross, No idea how many blooming stems there are. The area is a lot richer than I thought. These populations are somewhat near to the populations I've been watching for 20 or so years but I've not been privy to these groupings before. I will be keeping an "eye" on the plants to see what sort of capsule set there is, but Warren (Stoutamire) tells me that the plants are not pollinated by honey bees, but by bumble/carpenter type bees so the decline of honey bees should not affect capsule set. The larger question is: Will the deer leave the plants alone? I'll do my best to keep you posted!

All the wild orchid in NY are illegal to have.You will never get them to grow.Cornell tried. I believe they made some grow but even they struggled.The conditions it takes to germinate these plants can not be duplicated in your home, yard,or nursery.It takes the perfect soil conditions.The seeds need to be just the right depth in the ground and you need a certain fungus to help them along.Then its years before you see a plant

Lady slippers is a protected plant in many places. As mentioned in the above post, these are fragile plants and have a long period of maturation to blossom, thus are not prolific. I have been told that picking the blossom kills the plant, but I don't have authorative data about this statement.

Picking Lady Slipper flowers does not kill the plant. Have 2 large clumps in my yard that I transplanted there . They grow like weeds along the RR tracks going by my house. Every few years they get sprayed and what ever else they do to kill weeds etc and they always come back,so I don't think I did any harm saving a few. To transplant them you have to take quite a good sized ball of soil with them so they don't feel quite so replanted. I've grown them in full sun for about 15 years now.These are the yellow ones.
