I live in central Phoenix. I planted two of these at the end of April/beginning of May of this year (2015). I got them from Ebay from a Nursery in Florida for less than $50 including shipping. They were both 3 foot tall skinny sticks with no leaves when they arrived. 7 months later they both got top heavy so I had to thin them both. One of them is just under 6 feet tall and the other one is over 7 feet tall. They survived the intense summer heat with no problem, which was awesome considering not planting them at the best time of the year. We've had a couple nights in the upper 30's so far this winter, and they are fine. Only concern is if we have a hard freeze which we have every couple years. I put tree/mulch rings around both of them to help retain water and hopefully help in case of a freeze, but will take additional measures if there's any real threat. Hoping these become huge shade tree's soon! I don't expect them to get as huge as they would in their natural habitat, but I still put them in a big open space, far away from my property and any sort of structure. The trunk and leaves are both red and green right now; they look very festive. I don't like evergreen tree's in the winter other than pine, but I just had to give these a try.

Oh my son does Planto.. but he's at an age where he's so so, on the plants. Yes, he still wants to buy them and cares for them, and we talk and share blooms and such.. but he is almost 17 so ... hanging with mom is a little less these days. ;-) We are going to join a local club soon.. but he's not a nut about all this like me. lol... Aztcqn, I have loved getting to know you better and look forward to more! Yes , we are gold diggers. ;-) Well my mom is from Ohio.. Arizona wasn't really her choice place to move.. but life is what it is.. so she's not to fond of cactus and such. lol.. I am native, so I love our desert and all it's wonders! I am going to get her a few small plants soon. Today was her birthday! we had a cookout and I talked her into putting a few small cactus in her front yard. :-) Dad built their porch and has an area he doesn't want mom to water , so the foundation doesn't settle.. but it needs something. so hey.. cactus! right. lol... Hm, I've lived in San Diego for a while, and it does not look like anything I've seen. With Sunset guide listing its hardiness zone as "H2" that does not seem promising -- they are usually more accurate than just the USDA. I think the problem would be that coastal SD is Zone 10 but with low heat accumulation, while inland SD is Zone 9 with high heat accumulation. Either the lack of heat will cause it to suffer, or the frost will, depending on your area. SD's climate is very, very different from Hawaii's even though one can grow a lot of tropicals. )But so can San Franciscans, and that is REALLY far from being tropical...) So I'd do even more research on this one... Good luck!
