DavidfromDetroit: I'm in Metro Detroit as well, central Oakland County. I've had tremendous trouble this year with chipmunks destroying seedlings -- corn, squash, cucumbers, beans, etc. Or, more accurately, not destroying them, but digging up the seed and then replanting it somewhere in big clumps. So, instead of a flat of squash transplants, I had a giant clump of various, mixed squash come up in one of my big barrel planters outside of my greenhouse -- what a waste of good seed. Go to the hardware store and buy yourself a WHOLE BUNCH of the good, plastic snap type rat traps -- the kind that are all plastic and highly reusable. They cost about $5 each, but are worth it. I bought 4, but probably should get 4 more at least. Seems that there is a never ending supply of chipmunks. After I killed the first one, I thought I was safe -- wrong! Use peanut butter and birdseed as the bait, and set the traps all over. Chipmunks seem to like to run along the perimeter of buildings, etc -- I've had particular luck setting the traps right along the foundation of my greenhouse. In fact, I had a 2 for 1 today -- got kill #11 and #12 within about 2 hours of each other this afternoon. Planted a new Corkscrew Willow tree this evening, so it got some nice Chipmunk fertilizer at the bottom of the hole. I'll think fondly of Alvin and Theodore whenever I look at it!

Not a fan of small rodents. Not because they scare me or anything, I used to raise fancy mice. They ALL tend to be destructive. Field mice won't allow any balloon flowers or relatives in my garden, they will be eaten withing a day (they also eat obedient plant, but only when it's close to flowering). Chipmonks ate every flower head off of my cornflowers. Red squirrels...my grandma used to shoot them on sight, and I understand why! I found one in my potting shed the other day and MAN I was wishing I had her .22 with me when I opened those doors! Instead I made that click click click type noise the grays make and it took off like a shot. I'm sure it'll be back in there. We had damage from them in our house when we bought it, I'd rather not see them around at all. I considered taking out the few pines/spruces around to encourage them to move on, but I have to wonder if they've adapted enough not to care...

these days with all the infected websites don't ever just click on a link if you do not know any thing about it. there have been some instances in other forums where trolls have been going in and posting a link to some supposed wonderful site or something and in fact the site is one that has an infected i-frame which then installs that dreadful antivirus xp 2008 etc on their pc. So be very wary when something like this happens. I am running linux so I can check them out, if you are on windows just ignore them. We recently saw an infected i-frame on a big bank site and on a mop site, the owners of course had no idea they had some nasty embedded on their webpage till they were informed of the infections their visitors were getting. A good reason on to be sure you do all your updates on all your programs including all the recent Adobe ones and all your office products updates!
