These are not my cabinets, they are a picture I found on a kitchen website which I like and want to reface my cabinets in this wood. My cabinets are 1980s oak. Refacing is a process whereby you remove the doors and drawer fronts and replace with totally new doors/drawer fronts of the wood species, finish and styling of your choosing, and the rest of the exposed sides of the cabinets are "faced" with a wood veneer that is of the same material and finish as the doors. This would be done by a furniture refinisher/restoration company in my area that also builds cabinets, which I would need also in order to add a penninsula to my kitchen. The unfinished doors/drawers come from a cabinet door/drawer supplier. It is a fraction of the cost to redo a kitchen without all of the tear out of replacing the whole thing. And it only takes days instead of weeks and months to install. I've seen pictures of their work and they are virtually indistinguishable from totally replaced cabinets from scratch. We are also having the countertops replaced after the cabinets are complete and in place. Thanks for all of the responses to my query. I guess I might be looking at hickory.

The upcharge for painted cabinets is likely to be as much or more than the upcharge for stained cherry. For your lesser used rooms, consider oak cabinets. It's the cheapest wood option. If you must have a painted look, go for a partial overlay door in a recessed panel as that will be the least expensive choice. The standard for painted cabinets is maple as it takes painted very well, and is hard enough to withstand some knocks without denting.

I put in a natural white oak floor with dark stained maple cabinets and I really like the combination. I think you are going to find that most people like darker cabinets with that floor to provide some contrast. A lighter cabinet would create a more monochromatic room. That would also create a lighter overall look rather having contrast. It depends on what you like. If you are going with site finished, be aware that they do darken quite a bit just by applying the "clear" finish, which suprised me. If you are going with prefinished your final color is already on it and there won't be any surprises. clean the cabinets....the space looks as though nothing has been done over the years. When its time you'll have to do quite a bit ...probably a complete renovation. Save money and live with the floor and just use the space. I'd be concerned the appliances may cease to work any time so I'd be tuned in to a possibility they will need replacing and that is awkward . But this isnt the situation where i'd do small things one at a time. ...the result wont be satisfactory. Hopefully the older kitchen was factored into the price you paid for the dwelling.... look at it this way...you will end up with a great kitchen with everything to your taste/needs .
