As I recall you live in Jamaica? If so there is no need to wait to spring. It will take pressure off the mama. You need Maxi-crop. It is norwegian seaweed juice that is a root stimulant. Truly a game changer that all your orchids would love every 2 week. You will notice a change it the roots right away. All plants like it too. When you take it cut the spike very low. Use the spike to drive into the potting mix. The spike may need to be cut to be the right size for the pot.

What's it growing in now? If moving from one pot to a larger one, sure, do it now before it gets any further along and difficult to work with. If in the ground, then I would question the need to put it in a container. Much easier to deal with the plant in the ground without all the associated details of container culture.

I don't know if you can see in the photo, but the root that is branching on the left side actually has a pretty clean break a quarter of the way down from the top. I was moving it around a few months back before it grew any of those branches and must have knocked it accidentally. I thought it would be a goner because the broken root was hanging on by just a thread, but I let it be anyway. Lo and behold, node after node grew on the side below the break and within a few months all the branches you see in that photo appeared! It's funny though, that break never stitched itself up. Any time I move it, it's really fragile and just flops around and I'm pretty worried it will break off someday, but it still acts like a healthy root and continues to grow nodes past the point that broke. I always wonder if I should tape it up or something... Not sure if that's a ridiculous idea. Thanks! It's so hard to find attractive and affordable orchid pots with holes. Hi arthurm2015, I'm from Romania and we currently have a hot summer with occasional rainy day. We are in a mountain area so the humidity in the air is pretty high even indoors. I water my orchids once a week and the pot has drainage holes (one simple transparent pot with drainage holes, and the white "mask" pot with no holes). I never leave water on the bottom of the mask pot just to make sure the roots don't get to much humidity and rot. I did notice on this pot that there are some small flies coming out from the soil, it may be from the mother plant that I think might be sick. Do you know what to do with these flies (small insects with 2 wings)? I don't want to contaminate my other orchids that are sitting just next to this one.
