Again, Member hyperdoggie share another idea this time using plastic yogurt cups and a blue and white theme:

The picture details out the steps of the project and here are some additional hints and tips:

They are for my kitchen, which is blue/white themed, so I decided I'd try and make them look like blue white pottery. Basically it's the same technique as the black plastic pots, but I did more hand painting of the colors and added in some silver gilding color before clear coating, and I also used a glossy clear coat so they would look glazed. I also poked holes in the bottom for drainage.

It will be ugly after the application of glue, but as you can see, it doesn't matter at the point, jus how it looks in the end.

I don't have much qualms about using the hot glue for outside pots, I have used it for other applications outdoors and it has stood up fine to our New Mexico sun, but my potted plants here are usually in shade anyway. I am going to try using silicon sealant to get some wider designs on the larger pots.

The "seal" look is where I applied a circle of hot glue and pressed a large bead that had a nice bas relief into it. I let it cool, then peeled the bead away.

The hot glue kind of "melts" a little into the plastic, on these cups and the pots, it doesn't want to peel off once it's on. Also on the blue pot, you can see a little bit of a "crackle" on the side, I put what I call "poor man's crackle" on it, instead of buying the craft store crackle mediums, I painted on thin stripes of sligtly thinned elmer's glue. Paint over it, and it crackles.

Iris, "I have decided to use the clear cups because they are such a suitable size for wax begonias. I will set them in a cake pan to obscure the sides." That sounds like a good plan. Don't forget to put drainage holes in the cups. How you do that might be kind of a challenge. I once used a soldering iron to melt holes in plastic, but that was messy and smelly. I guess I would try an electric drill or Dremel tool first. The clear pots could be an advantage, because it will let you see the roots as soon as they reach the sides of the pots and you can visually determine if your cutting plants are starting to get root-bound. Some plants, like Orchids, actually like clear pots. Aircone pots are clear and have a special design to get more aeration for the growing medium. ZM

TIN CANS, GUYS, TIN CANS. I have one of those can openers that leave a smooth edge. Around the OUTSIDE at the bottom (so the water can get in when I bottom water), I put 3 or 4 holes with a big nail (balance the can on a cushion and bang away)... they are GREAT... Then, when you're done transplanting outside, recycle the cans. They're sturdy and grrrreat! Best, Homegrown

I always seem to accumulate a large pile and never quite know how to get rid of them. The past spring, Cracked Pots (non-profit recycle group of artists) teamed with Allen Jongsma, of Agri-Plas, Inc. and the result has been wonderful. Allen and his company, take all plastic nursery pots, regardless of size or color, they grind them up and then sell the pieces to another company that makes pots again. What a great recycling story. The project that Cracked Pots began was due to end July 31, but due to the high demand the program is continuing on. The following is a listing of drop off sites. I use Kcups, pudding cups, solo cups margarine containers etc. I use whatever size is right for the plant I need to deal with. Are the containers "pretty"? Nope. I am more interested in functional. But it works for me. Recycle anything you want to. They all work! Good luck! Rosie
