Where should I put my hummingbird feeder(s)?

How Many Feeders and Where Should I Put Them?

Put out as many feeders as you are willing and, most importantly, are able to maintain. (It is even better if you also garden for hummingbirds.) Having more feeders/plants may help lessen the competition amongst hummingbirds, especially if the feeders are hung out of sight from one another (and the gardens are well-spaced). You may want to check this by thinking like a hummingbird... You may not be able to see both feeders from inside your house, but a highly territorial hummingbird will find the perch outside that overlooks both!

Experiment with feeder locations; once a hummingbird has discovered that a feeder is a reliable source of food, it will remember exactly where that feeder is. Go ahead and hang a feeder right up close to your house or even on a window. (Just be aware of the potential for window collisions on unprotected, reflective glass and with screened porches and other large screened-in structures.) Hummingbirds are rather fearless, and don't mind being observed close at hand if you don't make any sudden moves.

Note: The sugar solution in feeders in full sun may spoil more rapidly than that which is in shaded feeders.

Boojagirl: You can place the feeder almost anywhere you wish. Sue and I visited a wonderful B & B in the UP of Michigan and they had hummingbird feeders hung along the east side of their long porch. Last year, I hung our first feeder on a tree branch outside of one of our family room windows. This year, I made the "mistake" of hanging our feeders underneath several branches of a tree located on the west side of the house. The "mistake" came from the fact that I discovered that a few raccoons in the area had a fondness for nectar. Didn't know that then, but I do know it now. Presently, I employed a second Wild Birds Unlimited Advanced Pole System and place it between two trees in the south side of our yard. We can see the feeders from the house, but we will enjoy them anytime we're out in the patio. Hung under these conditions, the racoons won't be able to "access" the hummingbird and oriole feeders and "hog" all of the nectar. As an added "attraction", I have also hung a large hanging basket of Fuchsia and have planted several flowers which attract the hummers around the patio area. One you arrive at the site, scroll down a bit and you will note that you can check "attracts hummingbirds", check it and then key in any other attributes you desire and you'll find an excellent array of plant material to select. Hiya masondad! :-) Welcome! Just wanted to add something. I hang my feeders on the overhang of the house, but like you mentioned - they're kinda high to maintain. So, what I did was bought some of those neat ol "S" hooks (that are long) that you can buy at any birding store (or even from Lowes in the flower pot/accessory area). I have about 2 or 3 S hooks linked on each other to bring the level of the feeder down to my level so that I can easily hang it (plus easier to view at eye level). They're attached to one of those round thingies, sorry don't know the name, but it's a round metal with a screw at the end that you can just screw into the wood (the ones that you put hanging potted plants on). Hope you get your feeder up soon and have some visitors. You'll fall in love with them. Keep us posted and good luck! :-)

”Best” is so subjective; it depends on what layout works best for the user without blocking access to doors, windows etc. Your brother should set his desks up however suits him. It’s not like Better Homes and Gardens is going to come around and score it.

I keep mine around ten ft apart ( one on each side of the arbor) and provided some resting places for the hummers too. They seem to like a “ lookout”. That seems to work for me. I do agree that they won’t really come with a other feeder on the same hook area
