I posted about the same problem, and really only on my pears as far as tree leaves go. Mine's definitely a night feeder. I haven't done the flashlight thing, but judging by a nearby grape vine, I know I have cutworms there and apparently they can affect fruit trees! Who knew, lol? I'm treating for cutworms and I'll see if that does it. My pears are young (not many leaves/branches) and begin branching low to the ground, too. So cutworms could make sense in my case. I don't know if that helps you any, but maybe so :)

John, CLM will not cut out circular parts of a leaf. CLM is actually a tiny moth, and it does lay its eggs in this fashion. The larvae hatch, make tunnels in the leaves and then eventually exit. The tunneling damages the leaves so the curl up and look very ugly, but does not do more than cosmetic damage to mature trees. Very young trees, however, can have stunted growth due to all their leaves being tender enough to all be affected, especially in areas of heavy pest pressure (as is where I live). CLM shows up for us here in S. California in late June/early July and continues through until the Fall. Some areas of the country have two episodes, one in May and again in later summer. The best controls are either with Imidacloprid systemic (which unfortunately in some areas of the country, they are finding CLM becoming resistant to Imidacloprid), or by using Spinosad. I am having a very bad time with CLM myself, now. Even though I treated with Imidacloprid, I'm still having trees affected. CLM seems to be attracted to certain types of citrus more than others. I am spraying with Spinosad as well, now, and I can't use a hort oil (to make it last longer), as our temps are hovering in the low 80's, so I fear I might burn my leaves. So, I will have to do more sprayings that I would like. CLM is mainly cosmetic, except with very young trees as mentioned. the UC Riverside Citrus Variety Collection doesn't even treat for CLM (as nearly all their trees are mature). Patty S.

Hmmm...I'd say caterpillar damage as they are fond of eating the most tender parts of the petals (which is the secondary fold area0 and leaving the tougher parts that are part of the support ribs at the center of the petals... There is something unusual in the throat of the bloom that has the parts eaten away and a closeup shows that the perpetrator left it's calling card deposited on the base of the petal at the 3 o'clock position... That is damage from slugs and yes they are usually only seen at night with a flashlight. They are quite small and during the day they hide in the leaves and mulch around the base of the plants and on the undersides of the leaves and crawl up the leaves at night. There are a number of slug treatments available that you just sprinkle around the base of the plants to kill them. Or you can go out at night and hand pick them or sprinkle them with salt.
