This is from last year, but still...

Love the bird pics, but I'm still focused on yesterday's photos of vegetables. Here are two winter squash I grew this year for the first time: Red Kuri and Sweet Dumpling. I also grew Buttercup and Butternut.

I had an unexpected vine show up. I still have no idea what it could have been, but it grew about 5 feet, produced blossoms but nothing else.

The leaves makes me believe that it is butternut squash. Often, they will put out lots and lots of blossoms before a squash will form. Once the squash forms, it will take at least four weeks for something decent to develop.

At this time of year, you probably won't get anything. Keep in mind that butternut seeds are easy to germinate. If you have a squash (any winter squash will do), rinse the seeds, let them dry and store them over the winter in a dry place. I put mine in old pill vials. Then, in early to mid-June, plant two or three about half an inch deep. Then wait.

Thanks, Jim. I was surprised to see the vine. I'm guessing a squirrel or bird contributed the seeds. LOL

It wasn't even in a very good spot to survive. Not enough sun, I don't think.
